I think you need a lesson in

I think you need a lesson in connector identification. Wink

What your monitor most likely has is a DVI connector, and you want to hook it up to a computer with only a VGA connector. Yes, it can be done, but it requires a prohibitively expensive adapter (http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0151-VGAT). The reason it's so expensive is that it can't simply send the right signals on the VGA end to the right pins on the DVI connector. DVI stands for Digital Video Interface, which means that it needs digital signals. A VGA connector only outputs analog signals, so the adapter must take the analog signals and convert them to digital.

So if you've got $400 to blow, go for it. If not, you can either spend some money on a newer video card with a DVI connection, or sell the display and buy a flat panel with a VGA connector (I'd recommend the first; a card with a DVI card can be had for no more than $100).

Four Easy Steps to Enlightenment.

Google:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=compaq+FP700+specifications

First hit:

http://support.radioshack.com/support_accessories/doc50/50710.htm

Salient lines:

Signal Cable: Digital Flat-Panel Connector (DFP) 20-pin MDR
Compatibility: DFP Plug-and-Play (DDC IIb)

Another "google" reveals that DFP is an old, fairly rare all-digital standard. Converter cables exist to convert DFP to DVI, but analog VGA is *not* an option.

So in other words, you're SOL. Converting the monitor to VGA would cost more then a new monitor.

Easy come, easy go, I suppose.

You could probably go DFP->DVI->VGA with more than one adapter couldn't you? Though the cost probably wouldn't be worth it!

EDIT: You didn't really need to make a new topic about this! You could have just continued your previous one.

Note I said "Converting the monitor to VGA would cost more then a new monitor." Example:

Some people might, but I don't consider spending $400 to use a monitor that's essentially worthless an "option".
