How to get IIfx connected to the Internet

MacTCP will work with System 6, although I don't know that I've ever done that personally. To get started, I'd want to test with System 7.5.5 and Open Transport first.

And you're going to want to get on eWorld.

I can't remember… Open Transport might be a separate install with 7.5.5. Does anybody remember? Go into Control Panels and you'll see MacTCP, Open Transport, or both. 7.6 surely comes with Open Transport, so you could start with that.

I know these are exciting times to just dive in and see what you can accomplish with your new IIFx and the internet, but you should think out what you hope to accomplish first: so I ask, what are you hoping to accomplish on the Internet with your IIFx?

I spent much time and money back in 2000 to upgrade my original Mac SE/30 with the rare Micro XCEED Display card which allowed me to see 256 greyscale on its internal 9" B&W screen (color, if I connected an extenal monitor to the cards video out port).

I mated this with an Ethernet card so I could have Internet access.

It took much money and time but I ultimately succeeded and discovered that using a 68030 with antiquated web browsers on the Internet of 2000 was fun and then boring: I ultimately sold it to recoup my investment.

Now I am sorry I sold it, as during the Pandemic, I did acquire another Mac SE/30 that had been recapped to play with again. But this time I am not going the ethernet to internet route because I just do not know what is offered to me there.

I did however purchase for about $30 a WiFi modem that connects to the serial port.

In any event, what do you want to accomplish on the internet with a 68030 Macintosh?

Open Transport is included with my install of 7.5.3 on my current Mac SE/30

Many archives use more modern flavors of stuffit/zip type programs to squeeze down the file sizes.

What software do you plan to use on your IIFx to download with?

How will you deal with unstuffing?

You'll need to re-register, but I'd appreciate if everybody used the same username as here.

I haven't used the WiFi modem. Does it support normal TCP connections? If so, you can download the software with your web browser on the old Mac using old.applefritter.com.

You can also connect with any telnet client at bbs.applefritter.com. You'll miss out on the character that makes it eWorld using that method, but it will still work. I haven't used the telnet interface much, so if anybody runs into a problem with it, please let me know.
