Two Drive Dilemma

Hi all,

Posted this on Reddit but it seems to be a head scratcher, so was wondering if anyone could help me troubleshoot.

Purchased a IIGS system with both 3.5" and 5.25" drives. Seller tested and showed both drives as working.

The issue I'm having is that I cannot get the 3.5" drive to be recognized if anything is daisy chained to the back of it. Tested with the physical 5.25" drive he sent, no go. Tested with a FloppyEmu in 5.25" mode in the back, no go. Tried to go into the IIGS Control Panel and change the boot slot to slot 5, immediately get check startup device error (and, yes, I made sure slot 5 was set to SmartPort). Interrupted a regular boot and did a PR#5, same problem; basically, when I daisy chain, the 3.5" drive stops being seen as a connected device.

The 3.5" boots perfectly fine if it's the only device connected to the IIGS's port. Same for the 5.25" drive and the FlopypEmu, boots fine if they are the only device connected. The only setup that isn't working is when I daisy chain anything to the back of that 3.5" drive.

Anyone seen this before, or better, know what else I can do to try to resolve? I only have the one 3.5" drive, so I can't try another to see if something happened during shipping that affected that daisy chain port, but it was very well wrapped, it seems unlikely.

Thanks for any help.

The Apple or Unidisk 3.5" drive must always be the first drive. It can then have another 3.5 drive or an Apple, UniDisk  or  DuoDrive 5.25 drive after that.

Yes, very well aware of that,

Yes, very well aware of that, as I mentioned in my post, the issue arises when a 5.25" drive is connected to the BACK of the 3.5" drive. The only way to do that is when the 3.5" is the first drive in the chain. The 3.5" is connected directly to the computer, it boots fine when nothing is connected to the daisy chain port behind it. Attach a 5.25" drive or a FE to the back of the 3.5" drive, and the system at that point loses the ability to know the 3.5" drive exists: it doesn't scan to the 3.5" drive when it finds the 5.25" empty, I can't boot by changing the start slot to 5, I can't do a PR#5, the 3.5" drive literally vanishes when a 5.25" drive is daisy chained to the back.

Understood.  Have you checked your interface card slot settings?  Slot 5 must be set to the 3.5" drive(s) while Slot 6 is assigned to the 5.25" drive(s).  This means that slot 6 cannot have any interface card installed at all if you want to use 5.25" drives.

It's a IIGS, slot 5 is

It's a IIGS, slot 5 is actually set to SmartPort and slot 6 to Disk Port. There isn't anything in slot 6...but, as I mentioned, the 5.25" drive isn't the problem, it's the 3.5" drive. The 3.5" drive works perfectly fine when it's plugged into the DB19 port on the computer. The problem is that it vanishes when a 5.25" is connected in the daiy chain port behind it.

It'd be interesting to try a different 3.5" drive to confirm that the drive has a defective daisy-chain card

That's exactly what I am

That's exactly what I am doing, the seller was more than willing to have the drive sent back, tested, and replaced if necessary.
