Favorite Music /Genre

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what the most popular music is on AF. I personally listen to Europop / electronic and alternative.

Most popular?

I think that, like the computers we own, the AF music collection would be pretty ecclectic. I personally run the gamut... Braums to BOC, Eminem to ELO, Mozart to Metallica, Dvorjak to Depeche Mode...

Currently, I've been listening to a lot of Breaking Benjamin, Franz Ferdinand, AFI... I consider what I'm hearing as Rock, sometimes even Metal, but I was told by an 8 year old that they are Alternative... All I know is that I can still mosh with the best of them. My catchphrase in the midst of a pit: "Bring it on, Junior! I'll beatcha like yer Daddy shoulda!"

Of course, this month means a lot of Tocatta and Fugue, Hall of the Mountain King, Night on Bald Mountain, John Carpenter's Greatest Horror Hits, throw in some Tubular Bells, and 8 different remixes of the "Halloween" theme... muwahahahaHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

Anything and Everything (well, almost)

Like the Rev. pretty eclectic, but I listen to a lot of rock. My current iTunes Library starts at A-ha and works it way through 257 artists to finish with York...

And why leave Tubular Bells for October? It's great all year round (as is most Mike Oldfield IMHO)

My favorite music is good music. The only genre I don't like is bad music.

edit: just noticed my sig that I ripped off from the Onion. LOL. Guess I consider the Dixie Chicks bad music.

Favourite Music

Like most on AppleFritter, I've got a fairly eclectic taste in music. My top ten artists would have to be:

  • Supertramp
  • ABBA
  • Céline Dion (English & French)
  • Mylène Farmer
  • Styx
  • Darren Hayes
  • Savage Garden
  • Garth Brooks
  • Elton John
  • Alizee

Different days call for different artists, depending on my mood. It can be difficult to get foreign albums in Canada, although it is markedly easier than in the US, because of the large Francophone population in Canada, but without the internet and sites like eBay I wouldn't have half of my music collection.

Cheers,

The Czar

I have trouble keeping up wit

I have trouble keeping up with music genres, but I can tell you that I hate rap. I HATE RAP.

Here's some of my favorite artists:

System of a Down (their first album is better than their second)
Slipknot (all of the albums)
Thrice
Chevelle
Funeral for a Friend
The Used
Incubus

However those are classified, I don't care.

EDIT: Oh duh, I forgot my avatar! Finch is also another great band.

so, It looks like..

anything other than rap, Huh? I always thought that the Rock/Alternative type was growing in popularity. I happen to have a loud neighbor that likes to play LOUD rap Music at about 10:30 at night. The problem is when the Cops are called on the guy. The cops say "we can't do anything until after it's 11:00 at night. That's when the silent curfew goes into effect" There are sometimes that I wish I had a Sniper Rifle to take out the speakers and stereo in the car. (I have a perfect view of the Right door Speaker when he pulls into the apartments across the alley.) Therefore, everytime I hear Rap, Cringe.

Everything

I have 1,211 albums in my iTunes library. The list starts at 10,000 Maniacs and ends at Zwan, but has all sorts of stuff in between, including 2Pac, Al Jarreau, David Bowie, Frank Sinatra, Keri Noble, Rachael Yamagata, Semisonic, Snoop Dogg, Spinal Tap and West Side Story.

Which reminds me, I've been meaning to put my album list up on the Web for a while now...

Well... I like.. a lot. I have 4651 songs (almost 13 days of music) in my iTunes library. I import every CD I own. As for the Genres. I cant stand Rap, Pop/R&B (britney spears, etc), and i dislike most country. I list to a lot of metal. But I have lots of different types, from Beethoven to Killswitch Engage. I also have LOTS of music from http://www.ocremix.org/index.php (some awesome stuff, lots of genres) My most favored group however is Megadeth. Not only is it technical, articulate music. But Dave Mustaine is one of the most fan devoted artist I know of. He goes well out of his way to do things for fans (unlike most other big artist who could care less)

I'll add to the no-rap bandwagon...

HATE RAP. Despise it. I mean, don't get me wrong, as an (albeit bad) emo musician, I have to at least give music it's due consideration. So in some extremely rare cases, I have to admit that I have to respect rap music - but I still don't like it. Ditto dusty old rock n' roll like Led Zeppelin. I respect it - but I just don't personally enjoy it.

The problem, as far as i can see, with modern rap and hip hop is that it's just too packaged, it's too commercial. It's too caught up in the drudgeries of it's own gaudy image and too busy treating women like cattle and preaching about the glories of the so-called "ghetto experience" (which, btw, is hilariously ironic, considering the rich kid suburbanites who ::insert your best Dr. Evil quote fingers here:: "connect" with it), drug use, owning fast cars and being rich. Urgh. It's so unbeleivably rare to find a hip-hop artist who **actually** has something different to say or to express these days... which, I suppose is why modern rap artists seem to have no more than a 15 minute shelf life.

Ditto the disposable musical kleenex of pop princess divas who put out multiplatinum albums before they're old enough to shave. Yes, they sell lots of records - and Dell sells lots of PCs. But, as no doubt many applefritterers already know, higher numbers do not signify a better product.

Soooo, forgive my long winded-ness... I get ranting about music and I'll go for hours. hrmmmm, favorite music... ok, the short version, herewith:

•Saves The Day
•Dashboard Confessional
•The Cure
•Duran Duran
•AFI
•Barenaked Ladies
•The Beatles
•Depeche Mode
•Prozzak
•The Used
•Jimmy Eat World
•Modest Mouse
•Rilo Kiley
•Save Ferris
•Oasis
•A Far Cry (shameless self-promotional plug. Smile )

I guess that's good for starters... I love these threads Smile

Just Say No to RAP

I'm with everyone else here... NO RAP!!!

I tend to like music from most artists out there... though I haven't heard all of it obviously so I may not know of some of these artists. A few current favs artist wise:
* Barenaked Ladies (always a favorite)
* Goo Goo Dolls
* Bowling for Soup
* Yellowcard
* Kansas
* Bon Jovi
* Nickelback
* John Mayer
* Karl Jenkins (the composer, only because we're playing his music in marching band right now... it's actually rather spiffy)

So there it is... 1670 songs and about 1,000 still have a 0 for playcount on my computer. But, I have an iPod and I use music sharing in iTunes, plus my music library has been transferred through 3 computers (about to be 4), so my playcounts are all off.

C'mon... not all rap is bad....

Eminem (or D12) has got to be one of the most entertaining rappers out there... I ain't lookin for no gangsta rap or nuttn, but I like certain types of delivery... Ice Cube has a nice, rolling smooth to him that I can dig, and Eminem's rhythm is unmatchable.

As far as rap goes, ax0n and I both have agreed independantly that if you drop the lyrics, rap suddenly become a nearly standard electronic subset. ax0n also noted a person listening to rap/hip-hop commented that they didn't like his techo-whathaveyou-genre music because it was too "repetitive". Guess that hook for the beat in their rap didn't bore them... ::) Rap is way too tied up in image and posturing, much like the current state of "alternative" "emo" "punk". Go ahead, complain. Acute I'm calling out those genre-igots who think of themselves as "independent", but sound like all the rest. "You only an independent/alternative is you sound like su!!1!" I say ust go play some music and quit the crap, for all the posuers.

about rap...

I only have 1 rap song and that is " Lose Yourself" by eminem. It seems to have a good message about making the most with what you have. As far as things like the beastie Boys, Linkin Park, and a lot of other alternative music has a rap background, if you think about it. One reason I like Europo ( I like to listen to the Dl.fm Eurodance station on iTunes) Is that there is hardly a specific centered around topic that they all use. Which leaves a lot of room for creativity.
I am very much into the song "Moonlight Sonata (I think it's by Beethoven, Or it could be By Mozart, I'd have to check), and I try to get my friend's dad to play it on the Piano as much as possible. ( he used to play in the Army Band to he lost hearing in one of his ears (it's a long story). He's really good at the song.
Thx everyone for responding!

Seems this thread is still alive so...

-> Me: Rap hater. Should be called TAD, Talking And Drums, 'coz thats all it is. Rhythm and percussion? HAH. Maybe CRAP. Or CIORAP(Crappy Implementations Of Rhythm And Percussion).

What I do like is anything that I like the sound of. My iTunes music library is currently loaded with everything from Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails to ABBA and Delta Goodrem. My favourite all-round groups are The Cure, Manson and Franz Ferdinand. Others include The Rasmus and the Bee Gees... damnit I could list em all but it'd take me a few hours. I like a fair bit of dance music too, but only the well-mixed stuff like Madison Avenue(who seem to have disappeared...)

But I do despise rap.

I Have about 9 Days worth of Music on my iBook

However, I hav about 3 Days on my Powerbase desktop, and another 10 days on my Powerbook G3 Pismo. It totals about 36.7GB. Most of it I own. A lot of it comes from a few Local Artists that I know, (ranging from Blues to Rock, to Jazz, and even Electronica.) To give you a hint: U2 and Pomeroy come from here. I have been to a couple of their concerts and bought a lot of their music. I own about 99.7% of my Music.

My taste in music varies radi

My taste in music varies radically with my mood. It's easier to declare what I don't like. I don't like nearly all rap, country, manufactured pop, and anything that sounds like a cat being attacked with a weedwhacker.

Thankfully at just over 27,000 MP3's, I can usually find something of interest in my collection.

All kinds.

But mostly Baroque, Classic Rock, and some grunge.

Special faves:
* Johann Sebastian Bach (best music ever)
* Beatles (also best music ever)
* Antonio Vivaldi (plus some other Italian baroque composers)
* Rolling Stones (though not their stuff after say 1975)
* George Frideric Handel (and some, but not many, Purcell pieces)
* Led Zeppelin (just albums I - IV, rest is crap IMNSHO)
* some renaissance vocal masses (requiem by Da Victoria is outstanding)
* Soundgarden
* Screaming Trees
* Kyuss

More modern:
* Foo Fighters
* Queens of the Stone Age

I can't stand rap, except for some
* Beastie Boys
* MC Frontalot
songs.

Oh, and I like indie/garage guitar rock such as
* Ramones
* Dead Moon

Oof.. I'm too tired to do it tonight, and there is NO way that I can pick any of my music out from the crowd, so I'll have to make a PHP frontend to a copy of my iTunes XML database thingy tomorrow..

I listen to whatever song is

I listen to whatever song is stuck in my head at any given time.

My taste in music is manic, hypocritical and often just plain dumb.

I listen to GBS FM (SomethingAwful forums radio) a lot, and when a song gets stuck in my head from there (or any other source really, video games,TV, movies, other people) I grab a few songs by that particular artist including that which plays on loop behind my thoughts. I then explore that particular genre and decide what I think of it as a whole.

Interesting facts:
I love Primus and I passionately loathe Celine Dion and everything related to her.
I haven't heard a metal song I didn't like. Then again I haven't heard many later Mettalica songs.
I like rap. I like it a lot. And yet I hate a lot of rap.
My playlist features "Don't Rock the Jukebox" by Alan Jackson. Immediately following it, "Five Minutes Alone" by Pantera.
In My opinion, any song that one can breakdance to wins.
I think I might have amassed a collection of all the remixes of "I can't stop raving". A Dozen last I counted.
I can't find the Aphex twin song whose title is a long equation, and which when viewed with a voiceprint visualizer displays a really creepy picture of a face.

But despite all this I'm really big on early classic rock right now.

Not that I'm patriotic or anything...

But my favourite artist of all time would have to be NZ's very own Split Enz. Cheerful, creative, energetic and simple melodies - rockpop at its best, if I may say so myself - plus it's good to hear an honest NZ accent in a piece of music, not that awful psuedo-american voice that most musicians seem to adopt these days regardless of where they're from.

I'm also partial to a bit of the old Talking Heads, Duran Duran, Moloko, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Michael Jackson, Spike Jones, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Queen and Weird Al, but not necessarily in that order Wink

$5 80s compilation CDs often hold the odd gem too, and my music library has quite a few nice singles (by too many artists to list) thanks to the bargain bin at The Warehouse.

I'd also have to voice my distaste for rap and hip-hop, although I've heard some very decent Australian hiphop by a group called The Herd.

It's probably high time I add

It's probably high time I add local industrial metal rockers SWiLL (also on MySpace) to the mix. They sound awesome live, and have a raucous and messy live show, if the clubs permit the mess that is! Being a SWiLLage person means I have an alter-ego but, thats industrial Jon vs. technical Jon here... Biggrin

EDIT: And kiddies, treat SWiLL like primetime cable TV and ask mommy if it's ok to check, 'em out. They aren't singing about puppies and flowers and nice little candies... That's why they called the CD KillKillKill.

I think you'll get an idea of what I listen to from there ;-). I have a tendency to listen to a lot of French music. Don't ask me why, but music sounds better in French IMHO (and not in Russian, ironically enough ;-)).
