I recently acquired an Apple //e Enhanced that had only a few minor issues, or so I thought. It only has a disk controller card in it and I did find one bad ram chip which I replaced. However, for some reason, I cannot run the commands "RUN" or "LIST" in either the built-in basic or ProDOS. I can load programs from the disk drive just fine but can't run any basic programs. I haven't found anything yet in my searches to point me in the right direction. Has anyone seen this before?

Just a stab in the dark here, but what CPU does it have?
Bad ROM? Can you run the built-in diagnostics (OA-CA-CTRL-Reset)?
Maybe post a video of what's happening?
Well, this is embarrassing. It appears it must be user error. DOH! I was using lowercase "list" and "run" instead of uppercase "LIST" and "RUN". When I use lowercase for those commands I get a syntax error. On my Apple IIc it doesn't seem to matter, but apparently on my Apple //e it does. Oddly, lower case cat and load work just fine. Is this really a requirement of the ROM in the Apple //e? Is this normal behavior?
Seems your Apple //e is a non-enhanced after all - or at least the ROM is still the non-enhanced type. The non-enhanced ROM only accepts upper case BASIC commands. The enhanced version allows lower and uppercase.
Check the CPU type - what exactly does it say? It's also possible, of course, that you got a "partially enhanced" machine - so with a newer 65C02 CPU, but still with the old ROM. That's not a recommended setup, but would still work.
MacFly - Thanks for the explanation. The CPU is a 6502-40. Also here is a picture of the rest of the relevant part of the main board.

Right, that's clearly a non-enhanced machine. The CPU is a standard 6502 (not a 65C02), and the ROMs are also the original IIe ones. So, at least the setup is consistent.
So, you'd need to swap CPU and the ROMs to enhance it. There is nothing wrong with a standard IIe though, unless you really need to run software that requires the enhancements.
If Apple IIe showing "][e" on the boot up, it's not enhanced. When enhanced it'll show "//e".
To enhance one of these you need to replace four specific ROM chips, and change the CPU from a 6502 to a 65c02. These five chips are collectively known as the Enhancement Kit.
Close- the unenhanced ROM only says "Apple ][" like an older II+
The enhancement kit is the new CPU and 3 ROMS - the two BASIC ROM and the chacter generator ROM. If you can't burn your own ROMS, you can get a version of teh kit for only $25 from Reactive Micro here.

When it says "enhanced" on the keyboard, but the inside clearly isn't, then the previous owner probably stripped the enhanced chips and sold them separately. Not too uncommon for stuff from Ebay...
