what did you type that

what did you type that produced the SYNTAX ERROR?

Try typing HOME and then return. Does that work?

The keyboard may need to be

The keyboard may need to be thoroughly cleaned.  Also make sure the cables and socketed chips are firmly seated.

Well that suggests the encoder is broken.  The reset key is the only key that doesn’t go through the encoder and  it sounds like that’s the one key that works.

Hi, I changed the encoder

Hi, I replaced the encoder chip and now the apple IIe stopped to repeat number 9 or + on the screen, but the keyboard does not work. Any suggest?

N.B. the keys combinations for reset and test works fine

thanks in advance

Just fyi reset and apple keys

Just fyi reset and apple keys do not pass through the keyboard scan circuitry.  It could be the keyboard, the 40 pin ay-5-3600pro (you may have gotten a bogus or faulty one) or the keyboard ROM.

And of course, always check

And of course, always check the power supply first! Make sure all the voltages are within spec, especially the -12V.

Many thanks to all guys, I

Many thanks to all guys, I replaced again the AY-5-3600-PRO. The first one was a "clone" bought on ebay at low price, for the second one  I made sure that it was an original GI encoder chip and it worked. I fixed the problem, now the keyboard works fine.

regards

Apple IIe not working keyboard

I have exactly the same keyboard problem.  With the comments I've read, I will order a new AY-5-3600-PRO. Could you please tell me where you bought it so I can hopefully skip the "not working again" step.

Many thanks!

Apple IIe working keyboard! Disk drive down...

I installed my new AY-5-3600-PRO chip and the keyboard works like a new one!Now I have a problem with the disk drive that does not start. At power on, the drive creates a couple of "ttrrr" as usual, but it continues to spin continuously and nothing happens. It's like it's not a boot diskette.I tried with the 2 drive units that I have, different diskettes, with the same result. I also cleaned the disk drive heads with alcohol.Could it be the disk controller card that is bad? (which is obviously installed in slot 6)An idea of what could be wrong?

Thanks!

The most common failure on

The most common failure on Disk ][ is the 74LS125 on the analog card blows.  That is normally caused if the cable is plugged in the wrong direction or off by a pin.  That chip sort of acts as a "fuse" and usually saves other parts from frying.  The bad thing is, that quite often what it blows like that the boot sector of any floppy inserted into the drive will get wiped.  So until you verify this is not the problem you probably don't want to try any more floppies.
