Hello all - this should be a very easy question to answer for any Apple II owners. I have an Apple II Europlus with two disk drives - all clean and working OK however when I power the computer up all I get is Apple ][ on the screen and drive zero searches for a disk (which I don't have). As I've not used an Apple II since around 1980, I'm guessing it's searching for a startup disk. Is that correct, or should an Apple II be able to start up and display a prompt without a disk in the drive? Thanks in advance.

It depends :-) Obviously your Apple II has the "Autostart" ROM. You can insert different disks to boot: DOS 3.3, ProDOS (when equipped with the Language Card), Apple Pascal (UCSD p-System) when equipped with the Language Card, or CP/M with the language and the Z80 Softcard inside.

If you're lucky, you can find one between $5 and $10.
If you search the archives, you will find a link where you can use an audio file that will load DOS or Prodos into memory where you execute it to load to appropriate memory locations so you can initialize your own disks.

Have a look at ADTpro. With this progra, you can boot a bare Apple II to a dos system then write your own dos disk.

Just select the DOS Mster you want (3.3 or 3.4), and follow the instructions on the screen.
