Hello and 2c questions

Hello I'm mike good to be here.

I've been collecting parts for a long time for when i finally finish getting an apple 2 together I finally got an apple 2c so in that regard I'm happy but I also have issues. When I powered on the 2c color monitor for the first time in at least 20 years I was getting buzzing then what looked like a struggling picture trying to fill the screen, after that nothing not even the green light. I opened it up and first thing i see is a cap that looks like it's going to explode any second.

So the first question is there someplace that is good to get a cap kit rather than hunting them down individually? If it were a monochrome I wouldn't bother trying to fix it but its a color 2c and I guess somewhat rare.

After that I turned on the 2c to see if it would try to power up, the power light comes on the disk starts to do its thing then stops after a couple of seconds.

So my second question is does that sound normal or does it sound like I have a problem if so what does it sound like the problem could be, I don't know what the integrity of the disk is like since it's been in a barn for at least 20 years

Then I started thinking about the other parts I'v collected in anticipation of getting the 2c finally, like the ehman zfp-hdd external hard drive which has a 85mb hard drive in it and the 1mb fully populated apple 2gs memory board.

so my 3rd, 4th, and 5th questions are once I eventually get the 2c up and running do I need any software to use the hard drive along with which software would I need and will the 1mb 2gs memory card work in the 2c?

Thank you
Mike

Re: Hello and 2c questions

Hello Mike,
welcome in the community..
I'd recommend to first download the scanned Manuals from here:
http://mirrors.apple2.org.za/Apple%20II%20Documentation%20Project/Computers/Apple%20II/Apple%20IIc/Manuals/
and read them...
next - to move images of required diskettes you should use ADT and read about it from:
http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/
and the source for requested disks is at:
http://mirrors.apple2.org.za/Apple%20II%20Documentation%20Project/Computers/Apple%20II/Apple%20IIc/Disk%20Images/
and from:
http://mirrors.apple2.org.za/Apple%20II%20Documentation%20Project/Software/Operating%20Systems/Apple%20DOS/
and:

What is "the ehman zfp-hdd external hard drive which has a 85mb hard drive in it"?
and do you have any pictures of it?

Sure, I even took the cover off so you can see the internals. Sorry about the links I'm no good with inserting pics into this type of forum.

Re: Hello and 2c questions

Hi,

Based on your photo's that looks to be a SCSI hard drive which is not supported by the Apple 2c. Also the 2gs memory card will not fit / work in the 2c.

The start-up you described sounds normal.

Cheers

Re: Hello and 2c questions

Hello medwardl,

several remarks up till now... the resurection of a computer as task of retrocomputing is timeeating.....
unless you get a really complete working system you should split the tasks in steps apart with priorities....
in your case you are missing several cables - so then you should limit at the beginning the resurection
to the "core unit" - the IIc itself.

Keep the "additional units" at the moment sitting besides untill missing material ( manual and cables ) is complete.

It is upmost important to use the initialy given links and to download and read that manuals to understand
what you are doing and why.... retro computing is far different from modern computers and far more dependent to
technical usage.

The first hurddle is of course to replace defective capacitors otherwise you take risk that the malfunction
of the computer mioght result from damaged hardware or even might develop new more damage.
Its rather more uncommon that shops offer complete collections of capacitors for replacement.
Therefor its recommended to get replacement parts from local electronics supplier.... in USA for example from
Jameco....and of course replace the severely suspicious capacitors....

So first of all after that it will be good idea to:
Press the Open-Apple, Closed-Apple and Reset keys all at the same time,
after you turn it on,
and that should start the self-test diagnostics. ( very basic RAM and ROM test )
If it prints Kernel OK on the screen then you know it's passed it's own self-test.

next download disks ( .dsk-images )for Diagnostics and operation systems to PC.

purchase regular double sided/ double density disks for temporary usage.

Get ADT and make ADT-cable.

Check internal diskdrive.

transfer .DSK-images from PC to IIc. ( specially testdisks )

Test the "core system"

and after you detect that the core system is running correct you can proceed to activate the peripherial devices.

sincerely

Re: Hello and 2c questions

Does anyone have the capacitor list or just a component list for the color 2c monitor. It would make my life easier rather than desoldering them all to get their values trying not to mix them up while I hunt down replacement components. Out of curiosity are replacement flyback transformers still possible to find?
