I can't afford a dual G5. But I always liked the Atlon 64. So, when the ASUS motherboard on the Atlon XP 1700+ died. I shopped for a replacement MB, any decent MB is aroun $135+. And the PC133 SDRAM is also out dated. All the new socket A board uses DDR. Factor all that in, I can rebuild the system with the 64 for about $300 more. It's my excuse to get one.
So, Here I am, with an ASUS K8V SE deluxe, AMD Atlon 64 3000+. And 2x256mb DDR 400 RAM. I started to wander what should I do about OS's. I'll eventaully have Linux or SCO in it, but for the time being, I'll settle for Win XP Pro.
The Question that hit me was. Is there a special 64 bit version of XP for Athlon64 or Do I just install regular XP the software update will take care of itself?
Anybody with experience with the Athlon 64 out there? help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot
Yes, there is a special version, and you have to buy it seperately. It's supposed to be out later this year. You can install XP Pro on a 64-bit machine, but it'll only run in 32-bit mode. The Windows core components need to be rewritten in order to take advantage of 64-bit procs.
There is a windows bata version from microsoft (free or not? Can't remember at the moment...), but dealing with XP as a BATA sounds scary...
I don't know about the BATA version, but the Beta version of XP-64 is free. Although, you can't expect all that much with software that's not done yet, no matter what software or software manufacturer you're dealing with.
Anywho, XP-32 will be just fine for your purposes, especially considering that there are terribly few 64-bit windows apps available right now.
After a day with a few software guys, That's about what I found out.
Right now I have a slight problem. The memory I got with the package is not compatible as far as ASUS concern. I have to get that swapped tomorrow. I keep getting error during installation of XP.
I'll install XP-32 and patch it to be XP-64.
Thanks guys.
I don't think that there is any 'patching.' I think it's install the 32bit and live with it, or deal with a beta (got it right that time!:P) 64.
I haven't started to look yet. A friend told me there is one. He could have been wrong :(. Is there a 64-bit Window 2003? or 2004?
Tried the Beta, I think the 2003 build is not quit there.
you just built the same computer I'm going to. how does it work? what kind of video card are you using?
Here you go.
that's the like for win XP 64. you can try it for free. But, I suggest using a free version of Linux. try Knoppix Linux. It's free, and you can run it off the CD, or install it on your HD. just download the latest .iso image, and burn it to CD. resart your machine, insert CD, and choose boot from CD in your bios. it should come up. and (I think) it supports 64 bit processors. it also has support for most hardware, and it runs great on almost any machine. (I tried it on a P266, and it is very stable, even on somthing that old.)
Enjoy. -digital
I would suggest FreeBSD. It's got 64-bit support for most 64-bit platforms. And it's a dang solid OS to boot!
Mandrake has (or should have) a 64-bit version of Mandrake 10.0 out soon. It's a nice OS and is good for the beginner learning Linux.
Of course, if you want ease in installing packages, get Debian.
apt-get install [package name]
will automatically download and install packages, as well as their dependencies.
Beta XP64 is very unreliable, from what I've heard. For all 64-bit hobbyists (i.e. not Gary Gamer), I highly recommend adopting a Gentoo Linux Stage1 install. I've never seen a computer go that fast before.
Ya, I was thinking of freeBSD. I have 3 pull out racks. I havew XP32 on a HD in one of it. I have 2 more, I was thinking of Linux and SCO.
My next question is, is there any GUI that make it look or feel close to Aqua? I know it can't be exact or Apple's lawyer would be kicking their door down.
So far.. not bad. Solid enough and runs fairly cool(37C). I didn't buy a graphic card for it. I recycled the ATI9000 ATW from my XP2600+, which had the bad fortune of encountering XP SP2.
IIRC fvwm2 has an Aqua-ish theme.
What's fvwm2?
http://www.fvwm.org/ Stable is currently at v2.4.18, so: fvwm-2.
Themes: http://fvwm-themes.sourceforge.net/
IIRC the Aqua-ish theme I saw was a default theme available on the http://vectorlinux.com/ release. Now that I go and look at their site, I see they also provide fluxbox, XFCE, and iceWM. It's quite possible I was wrong about the particular WM, as it could have been iceWM. Without booting up a PC and figguring out which it was I'm at a loss. SOMEBODY has an Aqua-ish theme I saw on Feeebsd or Linux... ::)
