Mac SE trouble loading floppy

So I got a SE for free and well the hard drive ether took a dump or it got corrupted because it booted 2 times and then stopped. ether way I need to boot a floppy. so I made a disk image of a 6.0.8 system install, and it reads it a little but then spits it out and gives me a floppy with a x flashing. I made my disk using winimage and it does read on a working mac, I have put it in my quadra and it boot from it and does read it, but not the SE. I have tried 2 floppy drives, one from my dead IIci and one for the quadra 700, both give me the same thing. any suggestions? :~

Re: Mac SE trouble loading floppy

PINKBOY,

I don't know if I'll be able to help that much,
but I'll give it a shot.

1. What other type of Mac did you test the disk in?
1a. What OS is that Mac using?
2. Where did you get the Disk Image?
3. What program did you use to transfer the Image to Disk?
4. Have you pulled the Hard Drive and tested it in another Mac?

To tell the truth, I'm more of an Apple II guy,
but I dabble in Macs from time to time.

Maybe with these questions to start troubleshooting with,
you'll find out what the problem is.

Okay all you Mac Guru's...Chime In.

Re: Mac SE trouble loading floppy

Unless your Mac SE is specifically labeled as FDHD or SuperDrive, it won't read the floppy created using winimage. The SE uses a variable speed rate 400/800k drive, which can not be written by any PC (they don't have variable rate drives). You can not just put a SuperDrive in your SE, that upgrade also requires a ROM changeout to use it. The Quadra could read the disk, because it came with a SuperDrive. You'll need to create the image on the Quadra, which can make 400/800K disks. Use the floppy to copy over the image file to the Quadra.

how exactly do I make those 800k images on the quadra? and is there a way to link the quadra with a serial port to my computer to transfer files?
