Apologies in advance for a crosspost, but I didn't get any reply on the Vintage Computers forum, so I'm trying my chance here too in case this post gets to a different audience.
Reading the EDD documentation posted on http://apple2info.net/images/0/04/EDD4Plus_Manual_ua2.pdf, I see that if my drive setup is a DuoDisk, I would need a "DUODISK/UNIDISK CABLE UPGRADE KIT".
- Does anyone know how this kit looks like? Or where to find one (note a WTB here)?
- Is it a matter of getting this cable (http://www.connectworld.net/cgi-bin/dataw/L1565) to connect the DuoDisk to the EDD card and also this cable (http://www.connectworld.net/cgi-bin/dataw/L1564) to connect the controller to the EDD card too?
Update since I posted on Vintage Computers: I've found out on https://ultimateapple2.com/catalogzenQI/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_3&products_id=2 that a non-daisy chainable cable is needed for this card and Unidisks, but "MOST IMPORTANT: If you have a DUODISK this cable is NOT what you need. That cable is totally different and we do not stock this cable at all".
So my initial question still stands. Does anyone know what's a DUODISK/UNIDISK CABLE UPGRADE KIT or have a picture (or even have one, WTB)?
Additional comments/thoughts?
Thank you!
Olivier.
It has to be a matter of understanding the cabling modifications for the disk ii card (which makes it compatible with the duodisk) and the disk ii drive (which makes it capable of hooking it up to the daisy chain being the last drive in the chain). I have both of these modded cables which prove to me that the concept is valid.
The duodisk has only one analog card inside but what makes drive 2 work is the small four wired cable that comes from the analog card to the second drive.
Therefore, the kit must consist of cables. Whether they go inside the drives or not I don't know.
Thank you Insanitor, that's a good lead for me to follow (there's very little info on EDD with later drives and controllers, so anything helps).
The EDD card needs only one signal, the data output singal from drive 1, to be tapped and supplied to it. I wonder are there still protected diskettes that need duplication in these days?..
I have a question regarding the EDD Plus Card as reverenced on the Ultimate Apple ][ site...
Referencing the "EDD4+ Data Duplication Card", it says:
"This card is really a one to one clone with our "spin" on it with the addition of the led circuit and one MAJOR bug fix. "
I cannot find anything about any major bug fix. I see an update to the software, but nothing on a bug fix for the card.
Does anyone here know what the MAJOR bug fix is referencing?
I ask because I'm the one who reverse engineered this card and drew/shared the schematic. If there is a change, I'd like to know what it is.
(aside from adding R/W LED's)
Thanks in advance. -Bob
Perhaps you guys would have better luck asking these questions on the ultimate apple2 forums.
Hi macnoyd...
Regarding the bug fix that you refer to: there was an error in the card layout that might be the "MAJOR bug fix"
referred to. Over here in OZ, I collected a lot of info on the card: I had planned to build a clone myself as I
cannot find my original EDD+ card!
On the ReactiveMicro.com V1.0 copy of the EDD+ card, the transistor that turned on the read LED incorrectly took
its input from pin 17 of the disk cable. It should have been taken from pin 15.
The fix was to cut 2 tracks on the front of the card and apply 2 links a the back of the card.
HTH,
Laurie
Laurie, Thank you very much for that info. Exactly what I was looking for.
I wanted to make sure there were no errors found to the original schematic I had done several years back.
I had built a prototype to prove it out, which tested good but when I read that a "MAJOR bug" was found,
I wanted to follow up on those findings. Thanks again. Very helpful and much appreciated. -Bob
