Macintosh 512K

I've recently been offered to buy a 1984 Macintosh but it has the sad Mac face with the error code 01E000, what is it and is it easy to fix? Here is the description from the owner... "Apple Macintosh 1984 in good condition (Model No: M001WP 512K and serial no: F42709LM0001P. Height: 33 cm. Width: 24cm. Depth: 26cm.
Produces floppy disk sad face icon onscreen when powered up with no. 01E000 under it.
External Drive 800K (1985) Model No. MO131. Serial No: Y5COMMJ.
Keyboard Model No. MO110, Serial No: G422M011012822.
Mouse: Model No: MO100, Serial No: G419M01000034
Manuels including for computer and external drive.
Comes with original cardboard box. "

Is it worth it for around about $70USD?
EDIT: Also is this the model with the signatures inside the case? Thanks.

Re: Macintosh 512K

The 512k's don't usually command the same price as the 128k's. But having the original packaging is a bonus. If you can get it for $70 and pick it up locally, I think that is a fair price. Although, if you have to pay for shipping, and repair, that reduced the value considerably. If you need a motherboard that does not give you the sad face let me know. I have a few.

If no one else looks up that error code for you, remind me (see my email in my sig) and I can check my reference book for those Sad Mac codes.

I think whether you should buy really depends on what problem the code indicates.

I think its a good deal for $70. Remember that even if you get a fully working Macintosh now you can't be sure it will stay that way for a very long time. You're bound to fix it sooner or later as with any vintage computer. Go get it and enjoy the fun of fixing it! Smile

Re: Macintosh 512K

I agree it's a good deal for $70 even if the machine isn't working.

The error code you list is a ROM Test failure and usually means the ROMs are bad. It could just mean they came loose from their sockets, so it could theoretically be an easy fix.
If the ROMs are bad they sometimes come up for sale on eBay.

You can find some good, detailed info on the Sad Mac error codes online.

Try HERE or Try HERE for example.

Okay thanks, I'll take a look into that, I just brought a Macintosh Plus for $300 NZD is that good? It hasn't been turned on since the 90s and has minor corrosion on the battery contacts? Thanks.

Before you turn it on i suggest you open it and inspect for suspicious componenst or signs of corrosion/leaks.
