although I always have admired records, I've only recently (and finally) gotten a good set, however one thing I'm missing is the Phono out unit. With that aside however, any good albums people know of? anything interest?

My favorite vinyl album of all time is James Taylor's "Flag."
I've been trying to get some Tangerine Dream myself, or maybe Aphrodite's child (I recall Vangelis being part of that), any ideas? It's difficult to get ambient works on Vinyl it seems
Whooo...that's an obscure one! Yes, Vangelis was part of that. I've only ever seen their '666' in the stores one time, long ago (I don't own it). Heard bits of it when I was a teen, scared the poop out of me.
I've got a good collection of electronic music on vinyl, including Tangerine Dream (7 or 8 albums), Synergy, Vangelis (not much - most is on CD now), and Jean Michel Jarre. His 'Zoolook' album that I bought as an import was the best pressing I've ever owned - not a single click or pop.
My holy grail quest for vinyl: an obscure electronic album called 'Elements' by an artist named Michael Ganner, or something close to that. Definitely not Michael Garrison or the other similarly named later 'New Age' artists. This would have come out around 1978, sounded like it was done on a Moog.
of course who could forget "hooked on Bach" which started it all? I know that at least in this area I had the guys that run a local store that specalizes in Turn tables see if they can't locate some Tangerine Dream for me, here's hoping...Still need to find me a Phono out amplifier, but I think that's easy (they sell em). Probably the most humbling experience however was listening to 1200 dollar rig play...the first time I could stand hearing loud volumes without holding my eyes (CDs do make a high pitched sharp feeling to their music)
For some reason I like classical a LOT more on vynil than on CDs, theres always more color. My absolute favorite vinyl would have to be "Rush - Permanent Waves" - Theres several songs on there that just shine in vinyl brilliance, like "Spirit of the Radio" and "Freewill" and "Entre nous" also, on another or rush's vinyls there is their song "Subdivisions" which sounds really neat on LPs.
1) Anything by Benny Goodman. The color of big band jazz is just amazing, especially when you are hearing a master.
2) Anything by Tommy Dorsey. Same reason.
3) If Deano or old Blue Eyes are singin', does anything else really matter?
My grandparents have two full size phonographs (HUGE CABINETS!!) and they still work and they have tons of old vinyl albums they play on it.
I've picked up rare vinyl that I never thought I'd find by searching eBay and on web sites set-up by vinyl collectors. Search eBay or google for the name of the album and artist. You'll find it.
A compact disc allows you to listen to 70 minutes of music continuously and the option to "shuffle" your songs. While you could lift the needle on the vinyl, I have an affinity for listening to the songs in order, and a fetish for actually having to change album sides. I also believe some of the greatest albums ever released were a result of conscious decisions about which specific songs to include on the vinyl because of the time limitations (roughly 20 minutes per side) as well as the actual order of the songs.
Then there's the packaging...
Having said that, Springsteen's "Born to Run" is still a favorite on vinyl. In addition to the great songwriting and Phil Spector-style wall of sound production, I can't think of a collection of eight songs better organized, nor can I imagine a better listening experience than hearing the first four songs on side one, flipping the vinyl and climaxing with the next four songs on side two. Plus it's in a gatefold jacket with that great picture of Springsteen and The Big Man on the cover.
Boston's first album, Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", Carol Kings "Tapestry" are also personal favorites.
I'm very fond of 60's and 70's bands from Chicago and the midwest.
Although I have a substantial collection of Francis Albert on CD, there's nothing like the sound of Sinatra on thick, heavy vinyl spinning at 33-1/3 rpm's or "young Frank" at 78 rpm!
Anyone ever see a "vinyl cutter" or transcription machine at work?

Oooooh...forgot about that one. Never heard it on vinyl, but I bet a well-preserved copy would sound awesome. The CD version I have of that album was mastered poorly; I wouldn't mind tracking down a copy of the vinyl version so I can remaster it myself.

Depending on what you are into there are also plenty of labels putting out new records. One of my favorites is Dischord Records. As a side note...I once heard about the Melvins putting out a record on 8-track?
I can't tell the differnce between vinyl or cd's. I listen to both and they jsut sound the same.
I do miss the groovy album covers. There was something speical about staring at the Pink Floyd album cover for The Wall and picking out all the little details. Can't do that with cd covers.
Does anyone here remember the commerical from the 70's for the lincoln contential? They had a record player in the back playing some music while they were driving down a bumpy road. I watched a show about that and they said that the commercial was real but they had to use so much weight on the tonearm so that it woudn't mistrack, that it would competely wear out the album after one play. LOL
I have a CD of Dorsey, apparently made from a recording of an LP. It sounds great.
Actually, i got someone to test me with the CD vs Record thing...I picked out the record each time. Way better bass and treble than cd, and way fuller sound (you would get it if you play a brass or woodwind instrument)
