hello

I have a Z80 Soft card .If I plug in the card in the Apple 2e.
Can not turn on the Apple.
The significance of the dip-switch does not know me too.
I put the card in slot 3 of the Soft Apple.
Do I something wrong.

I am assuming that the Apple ][e works fine when the Z80 is not installed???

Slot #3 is used for an 80 Column Card. If you have a card in the Aux Slot, very few cards work in Slot #3.

I ran my Applied Engineering ( AE ) Z80 card in Slot #5, this is where AE recommended it..

A manual might be located for your Card, and would explain the DIP Switches... Are there any Identifying Marks besides, the Z80??? It might be a Micro-Soft Clone. I don't remember changing any DIP Switches on my AE Z80 Card.

The optimal slot for the Softcard and most of it's clones is slot 4.

I've got my Z80 card in slot 4 of my IIe. I have always used slot 4, even back in the day when my II+ was new.

In that case, something is horribly wrong with the card and you should stop trying to get it to work before you damage your machine.

Hello,

The switches are always OFF on all card I've seen.
According to the schematic, they are use to control DMA, NMI, IRQ and address decoding.

The Power lamp does not go with card inserted to.

Do you hear a clicking sound coming from the PSU ?

When the card is inserted, the lamp flickers dark on the motherboard.
The PSU is quiet.

Hello,

I don't know exactly what you mean by "flickers dark" but I'am assuming it's not a short circuit on the card.

Just to be sure we'ra talking about the same card, is your card like this one ?

It sounds to me like the power supply is marginal, and the card puts it over the limit of what it can provide. What happens if every other card except the Z80 is removed? (Yes, it would never be practical to run that way because you wouldn't have any storage devices, but we're trying to diagnose the PS with this test)

hello

When all the cards are removed the same thing happens, the lamp flickers dark on the board.
I've also changed the jumper settings, no change.
My card is similar, and imaged on the top post.
In operation, an RGB card, printer card and disk interface card.

Re: Apple 2e Z80 Soft card

Your Z80 card is obviously damaged. Either capacitor has shorted due to the age or some IC burned. You could test the ICs by removing them one by one if they are socketed...With a removed damaged IC the power supply to your apple would be normal. You could diagnose the faulty chip with dozen of removals and power ONs...Whatever you do just keep IC orientation and don't bend pins while pushing the ICs back into their sockets.

1 document related to troubleshooting of the card.
I decided to add the related page to my site at:

The troubleshooting guide is written in German language... so it´s easy for you to understand it....
