Apple II paint color is it Pantone 453 or 454?

Ok I got a pantone chart, bought the uncoated which may have been a mistake because the paint is flat, but it's still a usable chart.

So I checked my rev 0 apple II and it looks like the drive is a dead on match to pantone 454, the machine is a little lighter than 454, but not much it might just be lightening over time.

453 is way darker than the rev 0 and slightly darker than the drive.

If anyone has access to a pantone chart and early Apple II and can double check my eyes, please do as I just got this chart, prior to this I would have computer matched paint made up but I think using the Pantone color code is better if it works.

Thanks,
Corey

Different batches of apple ii stuff has resulted in varying colors of the very same products.

Will painting cover up the texture of the original finish? And painting the disk drive.. Are you going to be able to duplicate the slight "flakiness" or "particulated" texture?

If you have a professional air sprayer, the splatter coat is easy. The trick is doing the cover last so that you can use it to match the pattern setting. Apple did vary the pattern over the years. If you do a quick spray for scratches and not heavy "body work" then if your coats are light and you do a few you won't cover up the pattern.

FYI: I'm not painting my rev 0 and I already did my rev-4 as part of a complete rebuild, But there was a question on the color of the apple
II a few threads ago. I actually have to paint my Helios drive case for my sol-20 at some point and touch up a front panel on a mark-8 so I bought the chart because I didn't want to drag the mark-8 to the paint shop.

Cheers,
Corey

Keep in mind that even paint will get darker over the years. If you find new paint that's just a bit lighter, that might well be the correct, original shade.

That's certainly true once you put it up on the wall...

I have no evidence if it's true for Apple computers.

Was the Apple used as a wall hanging?

I just meant about (wall) paint in general. Pick a shade you like with the swatches, then buy one shade lighter or you'll be sorry. I'm sure the same is true of painting a case.

Probably so. There should have been a smiley after my wall hanging remark. Smile

My experience is most paint fades with time, especially if exposed to sunlight. The well known yellowing of some plastics is a quite different effect.

I agree with the fading. I have two Sol-20 units, one I don't think ever worked so it was simply boxed away (in the dark) after it was built and it is much darker than the unit I had which saw a long life to the point it was updated with an 80 column card and a z80 processor with the 80 column card dated 1982/83 (so 5 years in use).

Corey
