Apple Cassette Player?

I'm just curious if Apple ever made a cassette player for the Apple II, or if people at the time were expected to hook up any old player? My own searches tells me no, but I thought I'd ask! Smile

Jd,

Nope.
As far as I can remember, Apple never did (like several other early companies)make a specific cassette deck for thier computers.Which seems rather strange when you think about it.

Yeah, that is pretty strange... and a bit unfortunate. I love Apple's early designs, and an Apple cassette player would have been neat Smile

But I suppose it makes sense if they were trying to get the Apple II into homes.... everybody already has a television and a cassette player, no need for Apple to make those.

Re: Apple Cassette Player?

Apple had some recommended cassette players such as the Panasonic RQ-2102, which is still in production.

I actually think it was a very smart decision to not create their own monitor/TV and cassette in the beginning it allowed them to focus and also appear to be more of a "home" computer if you could use your existing stuff.

Cheers,
Corey

Re: Apple Cassette Player?

It was great they didn't. They didn't need to spend money and resources engineering what everybody already had or could purchase on their own. If you look at the likes of the C64 and Atari 400/800, you HAD to get custom tape players with custom connectors. Yuck!

And the cassette port was my first modem. My buddy had written software and I made a dirt cheap connection to the phone line with a few inductors and capacitors. It was tedious hooking it up and getting it rolling. But we got around 100baud and were quite thrilled.

..then the MicroModem II came out and we never looked back.

I started to research exactly that same thing about 18 months ago. Do you have any additional details? It is still on my list of projects I'd like to complete. Thanks.
