Memory For Apple IIc Plus

Is there a command I can type that will tell me how much ram I have in my Apple IIc plus computer?

Thanks.

Yes, and . . .

. . . Your System Master Disk can identify if your system has an expansion card in it. Use the Catalog a "disk" option. If there is a memory card built in, it would come up as being in slot "4" drive "1", a RAM disk, so you should look for it there.

The //c+ shipped with 128k RAM. The expansion card could expand the system in increments of 256k, up to 1024k + 128k=1152k.

There is also a machine language test you can do;

DIAGNOSTICS AND TROUBLESHOOTING

1. Connect a video display to the IIc.

2. Plug the power cord into the power socket and turn on the computer.

The words Apple //c will be displayed at the top of the
screen.

3. Simultaneously press the CONTROL and RESET keys.

4. Enter CALL -151 and press RETURN.

The machine language monitor prompt (*) will appear.

5. Enter C40AG(the numbers here are four and zero, not the letter O) and press RETURN.

6. The following display will appear. Verify that the card size which appears is the actual size for the card installed (in our example, a 256K Memory Expansion Card is installed). The dots appear on the screen as the card is tested. The test will repeat until either the ESC key is pressed or an error is encountered.

MEMORY CARD TEST
ESC TO EXIT
TEST WILL TAKE 45 SECONDS
CARD SIZE = 256K

PASSES = 0001

....
....
....
....
....
....

CARD OK

Re: Yes, and . . .

Ran that test on my //c Plus, and got the following:

CARD SIZE = 1 MEG

PASSES = 0000

CARD FAILED
ADDRESS ERROR
SEE DEALER FOR SERVICE

0101- M=00 A=04 X=C1 Y=A0 P=F0 S=DE

Opened my machine a few days ago to check on some tiny piece rattling around in there, and don't recall seeing a memory expansion card plugged in, so any idea what the above message might mean?

It means you don't have a memory card installed.

Okay, thanks.

Is there a method of running a hardware test on the //c Plus that doesn't scan for an absent memory card but rather scans the hardware that's present within the machine?

You can run the machine's internal diagnostics by simultaneously pressing down Control+Open Apple+Solid Apple and then tapping the Reset button (then release Control and Apple keys). Or press both Apple keys when switching the machine on.

My //c Plus has only one apple key (pic). Must be one of the changes Apple made with the Plus.

It's on page 19 of that manual you downloaded during church on Sunday... Option+Command+Control+Reset.

Hmmm, tried both combinations mentioned on that page and came up only with the command prompt each time. Perhaps one of the keys isn't registering. I'll have to find out how to confirm or deny whether those keys are functioning.

Edit: Did a search and found this keyboard test. Neither the command nor the control keys registers anything on the screen. Don't know if that's a limitation of the testing program, or whether the keys just don't work. I'll keep digging.

Re: Memory For Apple IIc Plus

The Option and Command keys are the same as the OA-CA keys.

With your left hand, simultaneously hold down Control, Option and Command keys. With your right hand tap and hold Reset. Release Reset and then simultaneously release Control-Option-Command.

It's a skill that new people need to learn. The first time it works for you, you'll have an 'ah-ha' moment and by the time you've done it 2-3 times, you're an expert forever.

Control, Command and Option are modifier keys - they usually only do things in conjunction with another key.

Re: Memory For Apple IIc Plus

I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I tried what was recommended for nearly a half hour straight, using every variation I could think of, along with exactly what was recommended (and written in the manual).

Once or twice (holding down RESET for a while longer) got the machine to fully reboot and display the following:

UNABLE TO FIND A BOOTABLE DISK ONLINE.

Every other time, the disk drive would spin up for a short while, and I'd get a new command prompt. At no time did I get a hardware test.

It's also worth noting that holding down both the command and option keys while powering on the system did nothing either.

Can boot my computer into System Utilities 2.1.1, where the Command-? brings up a menu, so I know the 'open apple' key is functioning.

Perhaps much like what we saw toward the top, there is a machine language code that will bring up the machine's hardware information?

Re: Memory For Apple IIc Plus

I'm re floating this thread because I recently acquired a memory expansion board for IIc, I installed it on my IIc plus and it passes the tests. Everything seems fine but I just read here http://support.apple.com/kb/TA39886?viewlocale=en_US that the expansion doesn't work, and somebody commented on a board that a PAL (?) needs to be changed to work.
Any info on this? Comments?
Thanks in advance

javster,

Is the card working?
Is it showing the extra memory available?

If so, and you have tried it out with programs with no problems,
then what kind of answer are you seeking?

Thanks Gsmcten,
It does system check OK (but fills the screen with characters), passes the C40AG command, but I'm afraid I can damage the computer itself, I was hoping somebody may know if is safe or if something has to be considered before using it.
Thanks!

Re: Memory For Apple IIc Plus

Yeah, I know. That is a truly bizarre note from Apple, but I think it refers to a first version of the Memory expansion card designed for the //c (model#4100). If the expansion card is one that I sold to you, it was manufactured later, in 1986, the same time as the //c+ was being issued, works with the //c+ (was in fact designed for it) AND is backward compatible with the //c (model#4100, not #4000(unless it had a motherboard swap, which some did due to owners finding out about the serial port timing errors , and asking for the mobo swap)).

I used a //c+ with the full expansion almost daily for five years. I used the expanded memory to run Appleworks, and have fast changing DHRS screens in Dazzle Draw. Never had any problems. The machine still works perfectly.

Re: Memory For Apple IIc Plus

Thanks Mutant,

It is not for the one you sold me, but for one I found on a //c I bought recently. It had only 256k so did replenished it from a IIgs card, installed in the //c plus and has been working flawlessly, but had the itch that it may fail or damage something.
I will swap cards just in case, and I appreciate the help. You never know, and I really try to take good care of my //c's.
Cheers
