Re: Rev 0 Apple II on ebay............

Well it's certainly a clean system. It checks almost all the boxes, that apple sticker can carefully be removed and then the residue cleaned off using denatured alcohol or automotive adhesive cleaner (what I used on the 35+ year old foam adhesive for the rf modulator on mine)

It's got a lot of extras, just missing the integer ROMs, but for a few hundred that can be replaced.

Even the power supply looks right, though the serial number doesn't match the "lowness" of the systems number, my guess it was replaced very early in life maybe the first year of ownership. But even that is no big deal because the number is low and its the correct one.

The seller posted the serial number of the machine it's #1835. Not bad.

I can't believe how perfect the bottom plate is, usually they have some scratches or something. Or maybe it was touched up. Don't know but this one looks great!!!!

Cheers,
Corey

That's what I was thinking too. The earlier power supply has a toggle switch in the rear, and has a different top label. You can see one here:

Damn this is an awesome auction, did you notice there's even a softcard II brand new in box included? Not to mention this computer is in near mint condition! I’m thinking about bidding seriously high on this. It’s definitely worth some serious mulla.

Re: Rev 0 Apple II on ebay............

I'm pretty sure its too late of a serial number for a toggle supply with silkscreen. Seems you have to be in the 100's serial number for that awesomeness.

Based upon the bad condition of the last rev-0 auction a few months back just shy of 4k USD. This should get easy 5k if some who really wants one is watching.

Cheers,
Corey.

Actually assuming the digibarn supply wasn't changed,

They didn't start at 0 for the non toggle switch supply.

http://www.digibarn.com/collections/systems/appleII/

This powersupply number is low enough I can't believe it failed and was replaced so early in the systems life.

Actually, the Digibarn system w/ serial 595 has a later PSU installed; the original one should have still been the kind with big silkscreeened label. How do I know? Because of this auction which slipped under most people's radar:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/190803112553?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D190803112553%26_rdc%3D1

Why did it not slip under mine? Well, because I was the one who made an offer to the seller for $1250, AND THEN PROCEEDED TO MISS THE BUY IT NOW WHEN THEY ACCEPTED AND CHANGED THE AUCTION! AAAGH!

So if the lucky son of a you-know-what who beat me by 2 minutes to the Buy It Now is a member here, you can thank me for your new rev.0 :).

(Actually, in hindsight I was a bit relieved...it would have been sweet to have another rev.0, but it's not like $1250 is pocket change.)

Actually that isn't the original power supply. check out the silk screen and the rivet positioning on Cameron C's Apple.

http://apple1org.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/img_3174.jpg?w=1000&h=

I think the Digibarn is a replacement supply and they just moved the serial number sticker. You can move a sticker and remove a sticker or silkscreen can wear off, but you can't move a rivet.

Hi Corey,

I'm not sure which PSU you are referring to in the first sentence; the one in the completed auction I linked to or the Digibarn one? Because I'm sure the one in the completed auction is consistent with being original (it is silkscreened and has an appropriate serial number).
The Digibarn one is definitely a later replacement PSU (although still a VERY early one). Not sure what you meant by the Digibarn one having a moved sticker; to me it makes much more sense that it simply is a whole new replacement PSU, with its new sticker and all.

Howie

EDIT: Or were you talking about the PSU in the current auction that shows a serial number 8442 PSU installed in a serial number 1835 system? Because yes, I would agree that this PSU is likely a replacement as well, since its number would be too high to be the original.

Re: Rev 0 Apple II on ebay............

Howie

[edit due to brain fart]
I mean the [auction you missed] one isn't the correct supply all early supplies have the mounts in the center of each side (I called them rivets earlier, but they are really the internal mount points for the powersupply board). Later supplies had these mount points at the corner. Also every third part supply including a clone silver one I have that looks just like that one except for the serial number sticker has the corner mounts.

The [original auction for this thread one] is clearly a replacment of the correct type for its serial number but I'm sure not that is the one that came with it. It had to be an early on replacment because of the supply number is still pretty low.

Cheers,
Corey

I noticed that computer under completed listings. That SUCKS! Your not alone, I made an offer to a guy with a Apple IIgs upgrade a few years ago for $200. He added the $200 BIN, and someone else purchased it! I still havent gotten an IIgs upgrade!

Yep. And it should go much higher. It's a nice collection thay goes with it also.

I would stay this is the second most desirable of Apple II systems,
Obviously the first being a barely used rev-0 ventless Apple II with say a serial number in the range of 101 that say was perfectly stored in a bag in a dark closet and has never been cracked open (Craig I hate you LOL)

Transwarp,

The Bid is now $2650.00.

I checked the bidders and the price has been jacked up twice by folks who have more than 3 Bid Retractions in the past 6 months. Ebay rules only allow 3 Bid Retractions PER YEAR. A couple of these bidders have more than 3 in the past 6 months.
Just be carefull.

Re: Rev 0 Apple II on ebay............

Well we all know "Sellam's" non working beat up Rev-0 first went for 5K+ and they "never paid", then It resold for around 4k to someone who actually paid and it was missing the key part, the raised power indicator and was badly scratched up and didn't come with anything and it wasn't working.

So I would expect this to happen a lot with this kind of stuff. They even made a Big Bang theory episode of it where the guys bought the time machine from the 1960's movie by accident because they "wanted" to be in the auction, they just didn't think they'd win. In their case they didn't cancel the bid because then the writers would have no show for the week.

Rev-0 machines are not cheap so sometimes it's a matter of timing to find someone who has the money and happens to be browsing eBay. I have noticed this selling other stuff where it may not sell even with a buy it now, and I relist and an hour later it's sold. Just luck and timing.

Corey

Thanks for the heads up Steven. I’m already outbid however, and I don’t have enough cash right now to bid more.
The bidding has reached $3,383! Still a day and a half left till auction ending. I bet the seller is planning a vacation lol.

Transwarp,

Yes. Ijust saw the US $3,383.00 bid, but there are still three folks who have more than 3 Bid Retractions and 1 of them is the next highest bidder. So he is pushing up the price even more.
There has to be a way to combat this kind of thing. If ebay would watch some of these type items to see who is pushing prices like that, maybe ( and I use the term loosely) they might do something about it.

But I doubt it. :I

Re: Rev 0 Apple II on ebay............

Closed at $5766.66 USD...

So I would say the machine itself really got 5k, other than buying those accessories from the "VintageComputerMuseum" guy on ebay where I think the imagewriter alone would have been 5k (LOL), I think with some time a person could have gotten all those "extras" together for 500-700 bucks, but I gotta admit having it all in one place makes this auction an instant collection. But no one bids on a Rev 0 because it comes with an imagewriter or a early 1980's monitor, They bid for the machine... Rev 0 so rarely come up for auction themselves, and a working one no less...

So I hope the auction works out for the seller and he doesn't have a problem getting paid, I also hope the new owner is a member of AppleFritter or will join us soon.

Cheers,
Corey

LOL NO. I wish I had that kind of money to spend on an old computer.

I planned on bidding $3000 at the last second, but the auction reached past that amount at the 2 day mark.

I only planned on spending that much because the computer was in such excellent condition, and it came with a lot of awesome extras.

I think it has been the best condition Rev-0 on eBay in recent memory (since I have been watching eBay for Apple II machines)
I still can't get over how bad a condition "Sellam's" was and how much it went for. Fixing what was wrong/missing on that one would make it actually more expensive than this one that just sold. Sellam's was missing the Raised Power Indicator for example and seemed all scratched up. The last time one of those keyboard came up on eBay (good luck finding the cap alone) it went for over $400. If memory serves correctly, I don't have the link to the old auction, it didn't turn on and also the power supply was wrong. Fixing all that could be $$$ and take time to do it right and put in date correct components. I do remember the case was in bad condition also, professionally re-finishing or repairing the case on that one cost a couple of hundred dollars or more. If you put a rev-0 case next to a later one, it's pretty obvious which one is the Rev-0 (the newer one looks better), so you couldn't just swap another case from a II plus it wouldn't match.

Corey

The winner of the Apple ll Rev 0 auction immediately refused to pay.
I was contacted by the seller for a second chance to purchase.
This happened on the last Apple ll Rev 0 auction also... I was informed almost immediately the winner just didn't have the money.
I bet the seller never even reported him to eBay...maybe they worked together.

There have been about half a dozen of these very questionable auctions lately.

Any item involved in a fraudulent auction should never be allowed for sale on eBay again.
And if buyers and sellers are found to be dishonest they should be banned also.
There should also be some penalty and legal action.
I think I will stop buying on eBay for a long while.
After a half dozen questionable auctions I have lost trust in their system.

So, who thinks this machine is worth $5600?

So as I said the "Sellam from VCF" machine finally went for around 4k and it was in garbage condition and came with nothing not even a drive and needed a lot of work and parts. It also too sold for over 5k and the buyer refused to pay (wonder if its the same buyer). Then it was put up again at and sold, so I don't think it's the seller who was working with the buyer. Just a person who wanted to mess with the buyer. Or it was a case of the Big Bang theory's time machine, but the buyer didn't have the money, they just wanted to be "in the sale" and never expected to win.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Corey

I'm sure someone does, but I don't have anywhere near that much to spend right now. I hope when I list my apple II I don't get any non paying people bidding on it. Its just obnoxious.

Also:
Steven, it appears that you were right in your earlier post, definitely seems like shill bids are going on with this auction...

I don’t have the balls do even attempt to shill bid, I see it way more simple to just list my stuff as buy it now at what I think it’s worth. Way less of a hassle compared to organizing a dishonest shill bidding society lol.

If the "winner" of this Auction has a history of Retracting Bids or Bidding for Items they can not afford, I would report the Winner to eBay ( for what it would be worth ).. This whole issue might be the Topic of a News Investigation....

I would think that Collusion of a Seller and Faux' Buyers would not be in the best interest of the Public ( but definitely in the best interest of eBay, monetarily )... If eBay wants to host "Rigged Games", the participates need to know, Up Front, like when they attend a Gambling Establishment..

Re: Rev 0 Apple II on ebay............

Maybe I am naive, but I can't see a seller doing this on such an expensive and "visible" item. I could see some jerk trying to bump up the cost of a pair of shoes or something, but a $5000 pretty rare computer that will be "watched" by many and that would and should attract the attention of eBay if anything "funny" goes on. As a seller you can see how many people are watching and view an auction, and I'm pretty sure a lot of us were watching this one.

It like when I used to sell software and someone would be like hey I'll give you a nice expensive bottle of wine for a copy of a 10,000 piece of software. My response was always, it's not worth a $300 bottle of wine for my job, I can make enough money to buy wine the honest way. Then again I am a beer drinker Wink No one ever offered me a nice pint of ale.

Or as a buddy of mine says... it would take about 8 figures and a plane ticket to South America for him to even think about breaking his word or a contract... In the end it's just not worth your reputation.

Anyway, why should the seller risk their ability to sell on eBay over something so stupid, since eBay owns PayPal and PayPal needs to be linked to a bank account for sellers, I don't think it's that easy to get a new sellers account every time they get caught doing something fishy... Buyers accounts are another thing, I could see some idiot playing with people or just doing something stupid, figuring they will just make another account again.

As a said...

Maybe I am naive... or just not "street-wise" when it comes to eBay.

Cheers,
Corey

It had previously gone for $4,700, but the buyer did not pay for whatever reason. It appears the same buyer bid about the same amount in the recently ended auction.

When I see items like this and think about getting in on the bidding, I wait a while to see who has bid and how much.
Then I go to the bids and check each bidder to see how many bid retractions each one has had in the last six months.
If I start to see a trend with folks who have more than three bid retractions (some have actually had more than ten) I will write down the "z**z 888" (whatever it is)and notify the seller that he may have problems.
Sometimes the seller blocks these folks from bidding from all auctions and removes thier bids, sometimes they don't.
This was one of those occasions that I warned the seller that he may have problems with the winner not paying, but he would not listen.
You can only do so much...:)

The winner of this auction, who allegedly did not pay, had no bid retractions that I can see. What's more, the person who won, but did not pay, the $4,700 TVRSales Rev 0 auction *also* shows no bid retractions... and he/she turned up again in this one! The system is murky. Or am I looking in the wrong place???

Re: Rev 0 Apple II on ebay............

Guys,

I know shenanigans go on. I was the victim of one but it only cost me $60.00. Some seller I was dealing with had a plain Apple IIe, printer and disk drive for sale for a huge amount. After listing it for almost a year, I offered $100.00 for the whole lot. He was offended and told me to go stuff it. About 6 months later it came on the market again at a really low starting bid. I bid $60.00 on it. It rocketed past that and went to hundreds of dollars. The guy was local and I would have picked it up but not for $300.00. At any rate I congratulated the guy for getting so much for it.

He asked what I bid. He said come get it, I want it off my books! So I ended up paying $60.00 for it and picked it up. 2 or 3 other bidders didn't pay? I think not.

Ever since this and other tips I picked up reading this list, I am very careful now since I know people are out there just pushing the price up.

Ebay will have to do something. I just can't imagine bidding on something and not buying it. I accidentally bid on an un-opened Ethernet card for a Mac LC thinking it was an Apple IIe card and won it. I paid the guy the $40.00 + shipping because I couldn't stand to retract the bid.

Thanks for being a "Stand Up Guy"....

Over the 13 years that I had an eBay /PayPal account I have won over 79 Auctions, and never retracted a bid or declined to pay for an item.. There were a few times I wished after the fact that I didn't bid, or bid a given amount, but someone else won, and I never had the choice of purchasing the item..

I admit it!
Take me away and lock me up!
I retracted 1 bid since 1995 only because I meant to put $25.00 and put $2,500.00.
Everyone makes a mistake every once in a while, but some of these folks make a very bad habit of it.

Then you have the folks who win and don't pay.
They are in another category altogether.
It makes the seller mad and he/she does things that make people not want to buy thier items.

You're right Jay...It's a mess.

There is a new thread that was just started...
Apparenty eBay was hacked. The second chance offers are not real and I guess all our speculation is wrong. The buyer DID pay for the Rev-0, someone was just trying to scam people into paying for a machine they don't own and that as already been sold!!!

Re: Rev 0 Apple II on ebay............

NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!! THIS MACHINE IS MOSTLY NOT APPLE II OR EVEN REV-0

Here is a link...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/221216098239

This one does not have a Rev-0 Motherboard (looks like a later II plus), Can't tell if the keyboard is still Datanetics but I don't think so. Obviously the Raised Key is missing, but a real datanetics even without the raised key when you put the flat key on doesn't sit flat(it's up a little above the case), only the newer II plus sit flat.

Now what is original...
The case top, bottom and the power supply looks original...

And where are the pics of it working...
The seller says..
"The light comes on, the system bell functions, and all the keys work."

Good luck with that...

Some clueless person who saw the last auction will buy it. Personally I think its a great canidate for one of Mike Willegal's Rev-0 Replica motherboards and then you need to find the right keyboard.

I wonder if I should email the seller and tell him....

[EDITED] It gets better, they have a feedback of 1.
[SECOND EDIT] OK I decided to message the seller and break the bad news that all they really have is an Apple II case and power supply and that if they can't show/test it booting, it doesn't work, it just turns on.

You may ask why I'm so nuts about this stuff.... It doesn't bother me that stuff goes for a ton of money, but it should be for the real thing. I'd hate to have someone buy this system paying top dollar and stop by here with pics after they paid and we give them bad news... Kinda like buying a 57 Chevy and finding out it's a rebodied kit car with real 57 Chevy fenders, hood and wheels...

Cheers,
Corey

Yea it looks like the motherboard and keyboard have been replaced. Too bad, it’s seems to be in good shape other than the missing parts.

Re: Rev 0 Apple II on ebay............

One thing that concerns me is that I contacted the seller about the inaccuracy of his listing because of how it's mostly not original.

Also he has a feedback of 1, add to that the fact he says there is a 2mm ding on the case, but no pictures of the ding, makes me think it could be worst than mentioned. It wouldn't be the first time someone took careful pictures of an ebay listing to hide damage.

Corey

Re: Rev 0 Apple II on ebay............

Given the motherboard upgrade, I'd be surprised if those are integer ROMs. I think at least one ROM location should be empty, but don't recall which one, might be obscured by the cards.

IMHO, the lid, PS, and base have value adding up to $300 or so, maybe everything else another hundred or two. If integer ROMs, we know those go for more than a hundred sold on their own. At the time I write this therefore, $500 price tag doesn't seem unfair to an informed buyer, though an uninformed buyer would probably be unhappy with what they believed they were purchasing. But note it has not yet met reserve. Interesting to watch, in a "I won't be bidding" sort of way.

Nope those aren't integer ROMS...

It will be interesing to watch as long as those in the community know it's not a "good" one and don't factor its sale price into the value of a Rev 0. If not it could be like in the housing market, when you have a completely trashed home in the neighborhood sell for 1/2 or a 1/3 of the market value because the cost of repair brings it close to the market value, the sale can bring the overall market value down because there isn't a "data-point" for a complete fixer-upper.

We had this in my neighborhood, where someone's house was forclosed because they couldn't pay for it and they let it fall apart. It even had 7 feet of water in the basement where all the mechanicals were when the water lines froze and burst. So it sold for 1/2 of what market was... Next person who put a house up for sale was told, sorry the market value for your neighborhood averages X, and it was down a lot because we havn't had much turn over in my area lately.

Cheers,
Corey

Sometime, getting an Apple II rev 0 is a matter of luck and bidding speed..

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this question, but it sorta follows the 'how to detect a genuine' theme.

On an early Apple II keyboard with the raised power light keycap, if you were to depress that keycap with your finger, would it remain stationary or go down into a semi-lock position, similar to the keystroke of a IIe caps lock? I ask because I saw such a keyboard in a second hand store, missing the green cap itself, but exposing that kind of a mechanism beneath.

Re: Rev 0 Apple II on ebay............

Nope. It's not a real key. That's why I suspect lot of them didn't survive. People thought they were power keys and pushed hard and I guess they cracked or broke over time.

I had a compatible way back and it had a slightly raised power key and it was on a modified key which moved up and down on a spring.

I have a pic somewhere of my Rev-0 without keycaps. I just don't think I have it on me. I will try to post some rev-0 pics over the weekend.

Cheers,
Corey

Transwarp, Corey, and All,

I have been monitoring this particular auction also.
The seller has a Reserve price on it.
It is setting at $510.00 as we speak.
The minute I saw the Rev-7 marking and the board serial number
I fugured it may not actually be a II,but a II Plus in sheeps clothing.
I decided not to bid, but want to see if seller gets his price.
I would hate for someone up here to go out on a limb and snag this thing.

Hi, Gsmcten

Here is your another chance for a real Apple II rev 0, not from me, though the power supply is not original.

Yes, thank you for showing us this. I'm going to attempt to win this one. It will probably go over what I'm willing to spend however, it's not in bad shape but it's no where near as nice as that last auction that I got out bid on. I already have a silver power supply with a serial # in the low 2000's that I can throw in this. Hopefully it sells in my favor. I'll be in for an interesting project if I win it. (:
