I have a ROM0 GS, that has the original battery inside that hasn't leaked (yet). I would like to replace it, but was thinking about cutting the leads close to the battery, soldering wires to the exterior of the unit, and maybe putting a battery holder outside for quick replacement. Can you use, say 3 NiCads as a replacement, which would be 3.6v? That way they could be charged every so often, and replaced. Does the GS charge the battery when the power is on? If not, this wouldn't be hard at all, it so, maybe put a diode inline to prevent the charging current from reaching the batteries. I did a search on here, but didn't see any other posts. Thanks.

The battery is not rechargable on the IIgs, nor on any Macintosh for that matter, so no worries there.
You could do this, and I've done the same thing with a PowerMac as a temporary measure and it worked fine. But the correct replacement should last you many years without needing replacement again, and will look much nicer.
I use 3 AAs in a little carrier from Radio Shack. Works fine.
Might be better just to put down the $20 or so for a proper 3.6v 1/2 AA battery. They are supposed to last a decade or more, so that's something like $2 a year.
The battery might outlive the IIgs.
So, I clipped the battery leads off as close to the battery as possible, soldered wires to the leads, going to the outside of the case, and I am now using 3 AA size NiCads for my battery. Works great. Thanks for the info, everyone.

In my case the battery was clipped off and I only have the wires in place. I think if I can locate the same battery locally here in Spain I'll give it a try. Looks easy enough and means I can save my settings in the darn control panel.
