Re: THIS is Laughable!

Its not a bad guess IntegerROM - but there is a slight difference that is at least up to my opinion important to be valued in any kind of comparision - the one wants the amout as Minimum ( i.e. at least 500,00 Bucks ) and the other just claims that to be a "wish-target" of 1000,00 Bucks but starts at a bid with a Minimum of 50,00 Bucks - that shows at least some kind of recognition to realistic market values.... at least in my personal value the "hot-shots" are targeted to the minimum-afford required ( i.e. minimum amount to pay for item ) - so up till now my favorite is still the plastic apple stand for the minimum amount of 249,00 Bucks - that still keeps a smasher - specialy because it has been 3 times relaunched in the meantime at the same amount and still searching for somebody to bid on.....

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Integer and Speedy,

Yeah, the $50.00 minimum kinda takes it out of the category. Someone is liable to think that $50.00 for a satchel is not a bad price.

Of course the Plastic Stand for a starting price of $249.00 is still one of my favorites. And this guy just keeps putting it back up there. Maybe someone should send him a clue for his birthday.

As a matter of fact, the first time it came up I sent the seller an e-mail and got an earfull in return. So the question becomes just how long do you keep hitting your head against the wall until you finally figure out that that if you quit doing that the pain in your head will stop? Smile

hi gsmcten,
yeah it realy seems to be a very infectious decease.... if you mention my post related to the person naming itself "lanexpert" ? I also just sent him a short polite mail to explain that he just issued in hie text the typ-mark of chip (74LS05 ) instead of realy pointing out a serial-no. ..... (related to the fact that he claims to be an "lan-expert" and not even can determine the serialno. from a DiskII Controllercard.... is fascinating to me at least ) and the reaction was similar to your "client"...
citation: "you might be an expert to the hardware - but you don´t even have the slightest knowledge to online-auctions"
- i just mentioned that a simple Disk-Controller is not at all a "very rare" item and that 130 Euros ( in US 160 Bucks ! ) might be a little bit "rocket-pricing".... i didn´t reply, because the mail itself was self-explaining....

WOW ! now we reach the orbit.... startup with CPM at the cheap price of 499,95 Bucks ! yeah you read correct !
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Applied-Engineering-Z-80-Plus-Apple-II-CoProc-CP-M-Card-/380407154933?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58920888f5
run CPM with the Super Sonic speed at just nearly 500 Bucks ! no further comment needed...

and for another 500 Bucks you just get the extreme rare time tooo....
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Applied-Engineering-TimeMaster-II-H-O-Apple-II-Clock-/360430769245?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53eb59145d
so if you wnat to get the CPM files dated it´s just the cheapest amount of only 1000 Bucks together....
thats a real deal ???? seems i´m in the wtong orbit ???

Speedy,

Nope. These have been up for at least six months. "The620guy" has been buying and selling Apple II items for a couple of years now. It is just recently that he (as have others)lost his mind. lol

Last year at this time you could buy both of these items for less than $50.00 each. Now you have to be wealthy just to look at them.

I bet somebody will buy it sooner or later. But, as a purveyor and collector of fine classic computing "Stuff".. What makes this command such a high price other than stupidity?

BTW, the620guy says all his high-priced things, like a $500 clock card, is on consignment basis. If he had some serious common sense he'd reject even listing classic hardware that high to begin with..

While it's great that these things show up on ePay, I hope that no one ever buys them.

That is absolutely The Hands Down Winner for laughable price for an Apple II item. Considering that you can download the disk image this is definitely insane.

I did, in a professional manner. Apparently the operator of that auction doesn't honestly expect to get $9,999 for it. Nowhere near it I would guess. This, he stated, is "to call attention to the item".. to drum up press and get the word out that something is for sale. He said that it would be reduced in price to let the bidding begin.

You know how it goes today, any press is good, good or bad! Desperate times call for desperate measures it seems.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Now being a bit of a prankster at times. I wonder if one two or more people have done this in the past or will in the future.

That is for one month put up say IIc systems list them and then buy them back for say $2800-$3000. As long as EBay get paid and your system never leaves the desk.

Next month a new buyer ID and Seller ID selling IIe systems for 3,000 to 4,000 Ebay gets paid. Whether they chase the price up, or just buy it at a high starting bid. Everyone would be talking.

Then the Next month IIgs systems for $5,000 to 6000 with new buyers and sellers. Ebay get paid and every one is talking. But now they are starting to list tons of Apple II items hoping for that one, or 2 big hits.

Repeat it with different items, or same computers with even higher price tags.

I mean you could give each seller/buyer a few small buys. It would definitely skew the market for the listing coming on every one thinking they had gold.

Just some weird late night thinking.

My buddy used that idea to buffer-up some seemingly one-off "rare" items. Took it from non-selling $70 item to a sold $460 deal. He pushed it around through only 2 or 3 fake sales.

Pure Market Manipulation to sell your one item, something like the Enron scandal, rather than trying to move the market ahead as a whole.

Generally, when it comes to making money, who cares about anyone else, or any bigger cause? It's this way from personal finances all the way through to big corporations.

I contacted yet another seller on ebay and got a response, again, of starting high to get attention and "press" then drop it down. This one said that perhaps some flunky along the way might spring for it, my gain his loss.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Well to me it is about balance. When I am on EBay I go for the $$. But when on selling in these news like groups it is more of making friends then trying to get the Highest $$. But it really depends on the person. But that's just me.

So I would say some people care, and that can be the bigger cause. But I understand what your saying, and why.

Take Care

Integer and all,

Yes. I saw the $2000.00 IIc. I laughed until I almost fell off my chair. Smile

This is the first time seeing the VisiCalc for $1500.00 though.
Man-o-man, this guy is ready for an "I Love Me Jacket". LOL

There has been a trend happening up on eBay though. Several Sellers are coming up with Expansion Cards with a starting price of 99 cents. SCSI Cards, RGB Daughter Cards, etc.

This will be creating havoc with some of the sellers that have had thier prices for SCSI Cards up at the $500.00 Range for the last eight months.

The Seller with the $249.95 Plastic Monitor Stand is still banging his head against the wall trying to get his price for it. I wish him well.

Yeah I know - try looking on ebay.it - Italian site and you will get a shock at some of the starting prices - a plain old ordinary II+ can start at €1900 (1900 euros approx $2300)

I see the VisiCalc ad has been changed, it started at £2,950 and has been changed to £950 - maybe a typo Smile

hello steve,
it seems that if poeple can´t resurect their Apple - the new trend becomes to slaughter it for luxury....
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Apple-II-original-keyboard-/160804983841?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2570b95421
this amount claimed is more than for the entire computer....

I can´t avoid it, but this raises up again a nightmare: lot of guys with butcherknifes creeping around in a shop with old apples..... probably something like a refresh-version of "the living dead"....

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Speedy,
Actually it's not more than an actual II right now, the last two Apple II's on eBay each went for about 1300-1500 US and both weren't perfect. If this was the earlier keyboard with the encoder on top and the edge connector I think I'd bid on it, but it's the next revision. Still rare and actually a little better than the 1st one since it isn't as static sensitive.

I bet this one will sell. Now keep an eye on integer basic rom cards on eBay. What we need to watch for is a "Frankenstein" machine with this keyboard, the wrong powersupply (gold instead of silver) and a recreation Apple II logo plate being sold in a few months as a real Apple II.

For a Mimeo that keyboard is a waste both of money and historical significance. it's really only good for Apple II. You can buy a broken II plus for less than 75 bucks and steal the keyboard.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Speedy and Corey,

Yep. I saw that keyboard up on eBay and thought the same thing. I could buy an entire unit, bad shape or not, for the same price and use what parts I need for my other units.

Prices on just about everything are fluctuating wildly for some ungodly reason.
I figured the death of SJ spike would have settled by now, but they haven't yet.

There is one seller touting an Original Apple II for $400.00, but it has a II Plus Top. He says it came back from the repair shop that way. Yeah, and I have a part of Times Square in NY City that I'd like to sell him. Smile

Folks are selling IIc units for over $100.00 each just because they've been cleaned up.
They are selling IIe and IIgs units with missing keys and all banged up for over $300.00.

The one seller is still trying to get $199.00 for that monitor stand.

These folks are absolutely not living on the same plane of reality as everyone else. Smile

Steve Jobs "Personal" Apple IIe

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SJs-personal-Apple-IIe-signed-S-N-1501-/150822390887

I did send this seller a question about having any documentation to back up his claim.

The original posting is from http://www.a2central.com/portal/

This is the respnse from my question about documentation for this computer:

Dear me252,
HelloAbsolutely I do. This item was removed from his garbage. The mansion doesn't exist physically anymore. Look up the jackling mansion and you will see it has been destroyed. This was grabbed from the trash prior to the house being demolished. Provide me your email and I will send you photos of the deed to the house with other items made out to Steve jobs as well as photos I the property prior to being destroyed. I have a check made out to Steve for the sale of an organ that was in the house that has a legal contract as well for that organ. This is the real deal.
Thanks for your interest,
Henry- drplain333

I would have thought that a family member would have gone through the mansion prior to in being demolished.
I still think some sort of authentication is in order.
Just my opinion....

Re: THIS is Laughable!

My Response to his response:

Dear Henry,
"I will send you photos of the deed to the house with other items made out to Steve jobs as well as photos I the property prior to being destroyed. I have a check made out to Steve for the sale of an organ that was in the house that has a legal contract as well for that organ."

Again,None of this proves anything about the computer.Do you have any concrete documentation for the computer?Did you take it to have the signature authenticated? If not, then everything you have in your description is supposition.
Best Regards,
Steven

His Answer:

Hello,
I understand your skepticism. And to get down to the brass tacks no I don't have any physical authentication for this. I went to the Antique Coin and Heirloom roadshow last week. An expert took and look and said that it was Steve's signature. But, since I wouldn't sell it to them they would not provide anything more than verbal communication this was the real deal. Honestly, the signature means less to me than that fact I know it is Steve's personal machine. If you piece everything together there is a solid case but I understand where you are coming from. I have a deed to his mansion, a photo taken from the same angle of an extremely historic photo of Steve had taken 20 years earlier (mine being right before the house was destroyed). I know its his place and that the computer came out from it at some point. Obviously it was his property but linking that to this computer requires all the photos and paperwork, if that. What I lack is someone to "authenticate" the signature. I even have multiple floppy discs as well. One states "bookkeeping" which I assume are financial documents (from 1992 or before). If I was to get some sort of authentication I would literally add a 0 to the price but I don't know where to get that done. The issue is I know what I have and more importantly I know it is legit but for someone such as yourself to "trust me" is obviously a stretch. I'm fielding offers and appreciate your interest. I'm also happy to answer any more questions you have.
Thanks,Henry

Well, All I can say is, if you want to shell out 45k, its on you.

Worse than that. If the contract for the demolition crew For Jobs mansion doesn't allow them to rescue and keep items from the site and says they are to tear down and dispose of the rubble at a landfill. It may be theft if they knew it had value. I wonder what the Jobs estate has to say on this and if someone pays 45k will the courts take it away as stolen property.

Quite interesting question.... after all up till now it is permitted to the police for example to take away trash in the moment it has been placed to the street - but not if it is still within the limits of the property.... according to this ( a decesion from federal superior court in Washington D.C. ) it probably fullfills the crime of theft...,.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Corey and Speedy,

I'm not sure about all the situations this may fall under.
My main thought is that this seller has not even tried to contact Apple to check thier records. You know they have some sort of document that proves SJ had a particular IIe (either issued or bought) at his home.
Anyone can take pictures. Anyone can say anything they want in order to sell something.
Documented proof or authentication for such an item is everything and to try and sell a regular IIe, the average cost of which is $35 to $55 for $45000 is a totally different animal.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

hello steven,
of course your right... we just discussed a takeaway from the site to be legit or not.... but a sale with lies and wild story is another thing .... that probably fulfills the crime of fraud....

the point i wonder about is the moral out of the story:
ebay should avoid to be part in a crime, but they are so greedy for money ( i.e. fees ) that they don´t even waste a single second to try to find out if it´s fraud or not...... i`m waiting for years that a good lawyer picks up such a case and drags the company in front of a jury and gets them sued with several millions.... a normal auction-company would never dare to be that careless.... some day a clever lawyer will make a lot of bucks with this careless policy of ebay - that´s for sure ! The case will be similar in argumentation to the cases with the weapon industry.... "we don´t kill people... we only sell weapons... we don´t take part in the "killing-business".... "

Is it me or have I been noticing the Apple IIe computers up on eBay are twice the price that they were about a year ago. I can't find any parts because everyone wants a ton of cash for these. There was a bunch up there for $20 and $40 a piece and I got busy and the auction was over. The ones up there now are all busted up and still people are trying to get over $100.00 for them.

Yikes!

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Jay,

No. It's not you.
I go up to eBay daily to check out prices on II's (if any are there), II Plus's, IIe's, and IIgs's. The prices folks want for units with keys missing and the cases in less than good shape are getting to be really bad.

That's why I started this thread in the first place.
To point out some the ridiculous prices that are going on up there.

Another one to ponder:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Vintage-Apple-IIe-Card-M0444LL-C-Hardware-Emulator-/261048431617?pt=US_Vintage_Computing_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cc7b2f401

$300.00 for a IIe card!

The sorry thing is that someone will pay that price. Sad

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Steven, et al.,

I know what you mean. A shop today posted 6 Apple IIe Platinum units for $695.00. They are the most busted up, missing key units I have seen in a while and he wants $695.00 for them.

I made what I thought was a really generous (and perhaps crazy!) offer of $100.00 for all six. Shortly I received a counter offer of $550.00. Wow! Still off the charts!!! So I emailed him explaining my rationale for offering the $100.00 and he wrote back saying he can get $65.00 for just the power supply and if he parts them out he can get $400.00 ea. "I will say it backwards !WOW".

Does this mean if I put my carefully restored Apple IIe collection up on eBay that I can retire? Maybe so.

I am running out of places to purchase units at reasonable prices to restore and repair. (Something I used to like doing in the little spare time I have)

Oh Well, I will keep looking on eBay and local flea markets.

Thanks,
Jay

Jay,

I viewed that particular auction today and wondered what the offer was. lol
I was going to offer him $60.00 for the lot.
I do not understand the thought processes these folks are using.
They place equipment that is truly in need of repair up at such ridiculous prices.

Someone else had a IIc up there today for $500.00. Just the IIc and power supply.
I am not sure what planet these people are from, but it can't be from here.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hello Steven,
just back from the clinic and still handicapped with a "bondage-contruction-set" to keep the left arm tied to the body for another 10 days - till i´m permitted to use that arm again ...starting with gymnastic in 11 days.... so typing is now at the moment a little boring....

it seems your eyes are only fixed to U.S. market ...
otherwise you surely would have spotted out these two "offers" from bulgaria.... :
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Apple-II-Europlus-Working-Original-boxes-Games-Books-Software-/160827864327?pt=Klassische_Computer&hash=item2572167507
and this one:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Apple-II-IIc-Brand-New-Never-used-before-/150840824685?pt=Klassische_Computer&hash=item231ed0536d

both "offers" have been repeated for more than 2 months....
one for nearly 1500 bucks the other for nearly 1400 bucks ... just out of space...

and the other point is the fact that bulgaria was targeted throughout the last 30 years - before joining the EU - to be something like a comercial "black hole" with a good chance of 90% that payments to that country would "vanish" without the possibility to trace where the payment vanished..... so if somebody likes gambling high amount with the streetcorner nutshell-game - this probably will go off some day...

you remember the offer of 14.999,00 U.S. Dollars from that shed filled up with school-computers, where we started counting the units - and the yellow wood table....
look here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-ii-GS-vintage-computer-/230811883039?pt=US_Vintage_Computers_Mainframes&hash=item35bd75d61f
the yellow table is back.... and it turns out that the entire bunch of IIGS´s seem to be ROM1 versions....
you also remember the condition of the IIGS´s in the pile ? It seems he is selling them with the Mac keyboard because those for the IIGS´s are ruined ...
seems that he´s trying to get the money step by step back for the estate...

Steve,

I'd say it's still the "Jobs effect". Most people don't know Apple was founded by two people, they think Jobs founded it by himself, and the news media does help when they run stories calling Jobs the "Founder" of Apple not Co-Founder. So of course since Jobs died they feel that they can charge outrageous prices for original Apple II equipment and unfortunately there are people out there willing to pay those prices.

Just my two cents worth,
Dean
