Printer Problem

OK.

I have a G5, Dual 2.0 Ghz Tower running OS 10.4.

I have a Dell All-In-One, Model 305.

I have been told that my Mac will not recognize the Dell Software.

I am running "Parallels" software on this Mac. Shouldn't it be able to run this printer in some sort of Emulation Mode?

I really don't have the cash to spend on an HP AIO unit right now, but I want to switch from my current Dell Computer, over to my G5.

Any ideas , or comments are absolutely welcome.

Re: Printer Problem

hello gsmcten,
i guess rather better then the attempt to a none existant emulation ( there is none listed in the user manual of the 305 ) the better attempt is to install virtual pc at the mac and then install in the virtual pc partition simple windows-xp and install there the regular software of the 305.

the second requirement then would be to create a small partition as common-space with FAT32 that might be accessed from both partitions ( OS X and Windows XP) for the storage of documents and data that is determined to be printed.

Third requirement will be to use in both OS-Systems some kind of common office and printing software as similar as possible ( first choice for office is open office that might be installed in both OS-systems and treat data both the same way and for pictures probably GIMP which is also availiable in both OS-Systems )

then you might access the data from both OS-Systems and have at least the chance to print everything from windowsXP to the 305.

Re: Printer Problem

Speedy,

My mistake. I do have Virtual PC installed.
I also have Office 2007 (Win) on the Virtual PC partition.
I am going to go ahead and try installing the printer software on the VPC partition and see if I can get it to operate.

I'll let yo know the outcome.

Thanks,

Lexmark manufacturers Dell's printers. This thread should prove very useful to you:

Re: Printer Problem

hello gsmcten,
i advise to continue with Dr. Webster´s link above, because it will be the better solution....

the reason: a printer that ia installed in the original platform with its drivers allways will cooperate rather better than a printer set up at the virtual pc mode... that results from the fact that at virtual pc mode the driver is set up at a level that still has to pass data from the virtual pc mode platform to the platform of the hardware-BIOS and at the MAC that BIOS might probably not be entirely compatible with the driver translation from the virtual pc mode to the mac platforn and the related mac BIOS handling and that again might force errors to occure...

but with a originated driver setup for the original hardware-BIOS like the lexmarkdriver mentioned in the post of Dr. Webster ( the link to the driver within the mentioned thread ) the printer will cause no errors and it will be also thereafter accessable in the virtual pc mode.
therefor his advice ahould solve the task in better way.
