Hi,
This is a stupid mistake. On connecting a Disk II drive to the interface card I managed to get the plug on with only one row of pins on the connector. I powered up the Apple but immediately noticed somthing wrong so switched off!
Now the drive spins up on power up but does not boot a disk. I have tried another drive and that is fine so it is not the interface card.
Is there a fix for this?
Any information gratefuly received.
Thanks, Richard.
Sounds like you may have blown the read/write chip and maybe a diode on the disk drive II analog board. The chips are socketed, but the small diodes are soldered in. Being a diode they have be put in the same way. Make sure the black band is at the same end as the other you take out.
Best to pull the cover and look at the analog board with a large magnifing glass. Too see if any thing looks bad.
You should be able to see any damage to the diode, the yellow center will look black. The chip maybe. Sometimes you can, like a top blown off. I do not off the top of my head what the number of the chip is. But they are not real cheap either unless the price came down they are about $8.00.
Hope this helps

Hi,
Thanks for the help, very usefull as usual!
I have looked closely at the board and the diodes look ok. I suppose a quick check with a multimeter will give me more of a clue.
I have ordered some 74LS125's which should be with me tomorrow so fingers crossed!
Great, you should have a ready supply of 125s on hand at all times.
I mentioned in my first post, which I had to edit and had enormous trouble with the AppleFritter editing interface... anyway, once your drive gets into this state, it will eat floppies. Everything you insert will be instantly erased, even if it has a write-protect tab. Always be very careful aligning the pins on the header. Be paranoid about it. Use a bright light, and triple-check the alignment.
Thanks David,
I had one of the electrolytics go pop on one of my other drives and after replacing it I got the same symptoms.
Hopefully this will be a 125 as well !!
okay, some progress.
The drive I plugged in incorrectly has a fresh 125 chip and is working fine (hooray!)
The drive which 'popped' an electrolytic (C4) has a fresh 125 chip but still spins and wont boot (boo!)
If I try to format a disk through ADT Pro, the drive spins momentarily but is not recognized as an available drive. I have taken various voltage readings around the diodes and other components on tha analog board for this and a known good drive but all seems well. Could another chip have fried like the read or write amp? I have searched for these chips but none of my suppliers seem to have them. Are they obsolete or is there an equivalent. I'm frustrated with it now so I want to persevere to get it working!
As always, any info gratefuly received.
Cheers, Richard.
I got a disk II from eBay that had a popped C4 with the same symptoms. It turned out to be the read amplifier chip (probably in addition to the cap and the '125). I ended up getting one from Newark as a special order and of course found some on eBay for less once I had placed the order. I made a blog post about it as well: http://phantompinecone.wordpress.com/2011/02/01/resurrecting-an-apple-disk-ii/
I hope that's helpful.
Great, thanks for that.
I've just bought two of ebay so hopefully the drive will spring back to life!
Cheers,
Richard.
