Hi All!
I'm hoping someone knows or can remember this game and point me in the right direction.
When i was a kid, I used to play this Alice in Wonderland game on Apple IIe computers at school; we're talking late 80s here.
Now, I've googled, but it is definitely NOT this game:
http://www.mobygames.com/game/apple2/alice-in-wonderland
The above game is based on the Below the Root engine etc and is a sidescrolling RPG type game, and the game I used to play was NOT.
The Alice in Wonderland game I'm looking for was still definitely an adventure type game, except the way it looked was; it had a large static picture as the main point of each screen, but then at the bottom of the screen it had two rows of different words which could be chosen. For example:
TAKE | DROP | LOOK | MOVE | EAT | DRINK
CAKE | KEY | DOOR | WINDOW | CURTAIN
and using the keyboard, you might select MOVE CURTAIN, or EAT CAKE. Of course, the picture and words would change depending on which scene you were in.
Does anyone remember this game or know anything about it? Thanks!

Is this it?
Maybe it was Apple in Wonderland? Good news it is on Ebay now. Bad news well maybe bad news Sir Ghoul is bidding on it. Here is the URL.

Maybe this will fit a little better:

Hmm, thankyou both but no, neither of those are the game in question. It was definitely Alice in Wonderland, not "based on" it.
I'm a little confused and maybe someone can shed a bit of light for me, but last night I went googling for another game on the same Apple IIe I used to play "Dread Dragon Droom", but I could only find info about a BBC Micro version of the game; nothing on Apple IIe.
The machine's I used to use as a kid were definitely Apple IIe's; so I'm confused as to why Dread Dragon Droom didn't show up in reference to Apples. My point is, was the Apple IIe's able to play BBC micro games as well; should I also be looking in the BBC Micro world as well for this Alice game?
*confused*
thanks again for any help!
I looked for disk images of them on Asimov. Couldn't find anything related to either game or software company other than Alice by Windham. Sorry. -good luck
thank you all for your help, all I can think is that this was some kind of Australian-only game which has been lost to history and not preserved on the internets (I've owned a few hand-held LCD and NES games in the past which suffered a similar fate of not being mentioned anywhere on the internet).
such is life
cheers
Why don't you get a BBC Micro emulator and see if these games are as you remember them. According to Wikipedia Dread Dragon Droom was only released as a BBC Micro game (doesn't mean there isn't an unofficial port (probably unlikely though)). There is two possibilities here, either your memories are somewhat faded with time and the Apple IIe you remember was really a BBC Micro (similar shape), or there might be a rare undocumented BBC Micro card that allowed you to play BBC Micro games on your Apple II just like some cards allowed you to run early PC games and programs (AE's PC Transporter).
yeah I might have to.
The thought that time has faded my memories has crossed my mind, but I'm pretty damn certain it was an Apple IIe (that little logo is ingrained in my mind's eye) and the next time I'm at my parents place I'll look through old photo albums to see if I can visually confirm this.
This was all through my primary school (my dad was a teacher and would bring home a computer for me every school holidays, what a guy!); everything was pretty officially packaged and stock standard as I remember; so I would doubt that there were unofficial ports or rare undocumented cards circulating the school (but again the thoughts have since crossed my mind)
my curiosity is piqued about these apparent impossiblities now, and I want to get to the bottom of this. will download some roms and emulators and see what i think.
and damn there's another game I used to play but my memory is so faded, I can't even remember enough to describe it... something about finding lost pets at a zoo or something..! heh
thanks!!
--double post--
bmh, I think I remember this too !
I feel like we are part of a small minority whose schools had these REALLY obscure apple games haha... All I really remember is the White Rabbit or the Queen made you solve a 3x3 'magic square' puzzle, yes? Where all the rows and diagonals had to add up to 15? They gave you a 5 in the middle of the square, and an 8 and a 2 on the diagonal. It took me FOREVER to solve :)~
Do you happen to remember a Greek myths game too where you walked through a maze? I'm wondering if they were part of the same educational games package...
I think the game you're talking about is different from the one bmh is talking about. How many Alice in Wonderland games were there, geez?
But yeah, I definitely remember the AiW math game, it was one of my favorite games ever and it makes me sad that I can't find anything about it online (aside from your comment). The main part of the game was like a winding road, you had to do arithmetic problems to advance, and you had to pick cards I think. I remember you could go backwards or skip forward if you went on a block with a ladder on it.
Between levels you there were "bosses" I guess, that had harder problems like the 3x3 magic square you were talking about. (I think it was the Queen that made you solve the 3x3 magic square, but Mad Hatter had his own problem, with teacups I think).
I would love to find this game again! Or even find anything about it, a screenshot, anything!
I did some more searching and there appears to be an Apple IIe game called "Alice in Wonderland" by HRM Software (1986). I can't find anything else about it, but maybe it's one of the AiW games we're looking for.
hi sdb! i think you're right on the ball -- that sounds exactly like the game i used to play too! could you find any screenshots from the '86 game? i've done a bit of digging but so far no luck... will have to keep looking...
No, I couldn't find any more information online, but the next time I'm in Seattle I'm going to hit up all the independent computer shops and ask around. If I'm really lucky I might be able to purchase it, in which case I'll do my best to upload screenshots or even the entire game online.
Hello,
I wrote the Alice in Wonderland game being discussed in this posting. Anyone interested in more information can email me at rqkimball@me.com
Bob
Thanks for the replies everyone; so glad to find out that others remember playing the game as well!
The main bit I remember about the game is being stuck at the part near the beginning where Alice is really big and can't get past the tiny door. The trick (which took FOREVER to work out) was to intentionally give Alice three nonsensical commands in a row, which upset her; thus causing her to start crying the flood of tears which becomes the sea etc.
@unspeakable: I don't think I ever got that far, haha; but the other thing I remember is mucking up one of the puzzles and to my shock; being dumped back down the rabbit hole, only to arrive at the very beginning of the game again!!! My six-year old self was shattered! I don't however remember a greek myths game though; still sounds interesting!
I've just emailed Bob; I'll let you know if he replies
cheers everyone
Bob no longer has the code, was anyone successful in finding it?
Of course we could just write the whole thing over again, it would be a fun little project
I'm ALMOST positive this is the game you're looking for:

Looks like this:
http://www.abandonia.com/files/games/408/Alice%20in%20Wonderland_3.png
It has the exact same list of commands as you stated, and I played it a couple of years ago. I gave up when I got overly frustrated at actually getting Dinah (yes, I'm boring and named her the default) out of Wonderland after I already had her. Maybe I should have typed "wake up"? Who knows.
Anywho, if that link ever goes caput, I always keep a copy of the file on my computer for posterity, so let me know if it becomes inaccessible. You will need DosBox (or something comparable) to play it.

BMH,
Could it be "Through The Looking Glass"?
There was a copy of it up on eBay a few days ago.
Good Hunting.
Hi everyone, just to continue on this thread; i emailed Rob (The developer of the game) and he said that he worked on the game and they reused the interface for a Jack in the Beanstalk game as well, he sent me three shots of the Jack in the Beanstalk game and the cover of the Alice game. The cover is definitely the same and so is the user interface for the game. It was developed by HRM.
The images are here:

i wonder if we'll ever get a rom
this game is called wonderland puzzles, I used to play it all the time in elementary school.
Hi, would anyone know where I could track down Jack and The Beanstalk?
