Radio

This September, I'm starting as a New Media major at ULeth and I'm considering trying to put together a show for the university radio station.

I'm a big fan of good radio drama, and I was wondering if anyone out there has experience putting together a weekly radio show. I'm assuming that it'd eat a fair amount of time, but I'm working on pre-writing scripts now to avoid that being a bottleneck.

What kind of problems would I run into? How would you go about finding people to participate? Does anyone have any stories about stuff like this they want to share.

I'd like to get a better idea of just what's involved in putting together a radio show before I get myself into anything.

You need fast reflexes and a thorough knowledge of the equipment and general audio. In terms of scripts, remember to be flexible--digression is common and rarely avioded.

A great radio show to listen to is Loveline (with Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew). They're the masters of digression and being funny.

And here's a tip: never have the mic and the studio monitors on at the same time!

More like...

Actually, I'm thinking of going for something more like City Of Dreams or Tales From The Afternow.

Completly scripted with a small group doing voice. In a couple days, after this first script is done, I'll post a link to give a better idea. Maybe I'll just forget that sleep thing and finish it up tonight...

I don't have any on air experience, but I do know what you have in mind. I vote for a modernized remake of the 1938 "War of the Worlds" broadcast.

Set Of Conditions

I'm looking at doing this weekly, but in a few months, if a certian set of conditions occurs (possible they won't), then I've got a very good idea in mind for a 'Is it real or not' broadcast. However, that's dependent.

Also, I really don't want to give anything about that idea away.

When I was at Virginia Tech (

When I was at Virginia Tech (home of just a few G5's Wink ), we had some terrible skits on the student TV station. I always wanted to put on a late night talk show similar to Letterman or Conan. Students, faculty, ect could be on as guests, but mixed in with the real interviews and performances would be clips from the real TV shows. Besides the fact that most of the celebrities featured would never agree to appear on my show, the editing would make it extremely obvious that Brad Pitt and the Dean of Entomology were not on the set togethe and even thought I annouced it at the end of the show, we would not all be downtown having beers with U2.

Of course things like copywrites got in the way of that idea, but once you start to know the people on campus and the general atmosphere you can come up with all sorts of ideas.

Hmm what could possibly happen in a few months? Unless you want to hit the national news in a bad way, no fake terrorist attacks.

Well, I am Canadian, and as we all know, all Canadians are terrorists.

When going to the states recently, a friend of mine made the slip of the tounge and said 'terrorists' instead of 'tourists'. He then proceeded to spend the entire trip complaining about tourists who take pictures of buildings, and stuff like that.

National news...think I could use that to promote my business?

Under US law using copyrighted material for a parody is completely legal. Under Euro law it's not. As long as it is a "derivative work of parody" or something like that it is just fine. That's how SNL and MadTV do what they do. Ever really wonder why we don't get those kinda show from the other side of the pond very often?
