Ok, I have my wallstreet set up to dual boot OS 9.2.2 and OS X 10.2.8. it boots X just fine, but I can't get it to boot 9 unless I boot from a CD. I went into the startup disk control panel, and 9.2.2 shows up (I have it on a seperate partition). I choose the one on the seperate partition, clicked restart, it asks to save and retart, so I do. then it reboots, I get the smiling mac, then it reboots again, and the grey apple logo comes up and it boots X. it does this no matter how many times I tried. I even tried a clean install, and that doesnt work. it still boots X.
I have done the usual, reset PRAM, NVRAM, I even tried the system folder on the partiton with OS X that I use specifically for classic mode. that does not work either.
any thoughts?
thanks.

I knew with the earlier machines, if you held down the "Option" key before the screen comes up, it will default boot into OS 9 (classic). Apple later replaced this with the all-familiar screens with the Drive Selector. This didn't happen till the Pismo.
Try holding down Option, and see if that works. I want to ask, has this machine had XPostFacto on it?
Aren't there also 'm' for Mac OS (classic) and 'x' for OS X that can be used?
Never heard about that one... I should check it out and see if it works.
I dunno, when i had my Beige, i know that in order to get into OS 9 if something got ****ed up in OS X, i just held "Option" in order to force a boot into classic. I know, that if you hold the mouse down on a PPC or 68k machine, it either ejects the CD/DVD (ppc) or the floppy (68k/ppc)when done at boot
EDIT: and then there's the space bar. I think that is to boot off of CD on the older machines (68k/early PPC?)
Er, no. The space bar brings up the Extensions Manager before the system starts loading extensions but after the ROM starts loading the System.
"C" typically starts from CD, but command-option-shift-delete forces the Mac to boot from the first bootable SCSI drive it finds (aside from drive 0). Supposedly if you supply a number (command-option-shift-delete-), you boot from that SCSI ID, but I've never tried that. That's a lot of fingers...

I went by this guide:
http://davespicks.com/writing/programming/mackeys.html#boot
and used every key sequence to boot into 9, none worked. I get the smiling mac, a reboot, then the grey apple logo.
Like I said, the only instance where this works is with a 9 CD, but I need to press the C key.
and to address the obvious: when I was setting up the hard drive, I made sure to check the Os 9 driver option for all three partitions.
there is actually only one program that I use that can't be run in classic, and that is Connectix virtual game station, and I play that rarely.
I also have this issue on my Blue and White G3, which is running tiger. but i'll figure that out later. (no, the B&W has no system picker).
edit: no, xpostfacto has never raped this machine. that is why it runs 10.2.8, the highest OS X version supported nativly by the Powerbook G3 PDQ. And I find it to be on par with my B&W in terms of usibility. dont know why everyone dumps on Jaguar all the time.

My daughter's 600MHz slotloader exhibits pretty much the same symptoms. I can boot from the 9.2.x CD but I'll be confounded if I can get the *&&^%$^$@# thing to actually boot from a HD partition. This only happened IIRC after I had swapped in a 60GB drive to replace the old 12GB original. And the 400MHz MLB for a 600MHz MLB. Hmm, actually I can't recall when 9 failed to boot properly, somewhere amongst swapping the drive and the MLB though.
Ah, I gave up on figuring it out. After all, almost everything works in Classic, though some apps need a bit of kludging around to work - usually involving setting proper display bit depth (older Mac kids edu apps and games.)
I await a clue (too.) :coolmac:

Are you sure the OS 9 disk drivers are installed? You could also try blessing the OS 9 system folder with the shell "bless -system9" command (or something like that).

Drew
the system folder is blessed, as it has the big gold 9 over it in OS X. I tried that command, but still nothing. I made sure when i was installing X to click the box to install the drivers.
but my B&W is a bit of an odd duck. I installed 9.0.4 from my retail CD, onto a spare drive. that boots fine. however, if I update to 9.1 or 9.2 on the same drive, it gets as far as the pointer before it freezes so hard I can't even move the pointer. myabe it's a hardware issue. but that's not what is important.
oh well, it's not too important anyway. I guess if I wanted 9, I would have stuck with it.

have you tryed to reset open firmware, or held the cuda to reset the pram to set everything back to stock so it will be forced to boot into OS 9.x. if this dont work you will have to boot by cd and select the startup disk to select OS X to boot from .
By any chance have you upgraded the video card in your machine?
Not that this is necessarily your problem, but I found that after swapping the stock Rage 128 card in my B&W for an OEM Radeon 7000 PCI OS 9 would crash and reboot when starting. I traced it to the ATI acceleration extension. Disabling that by holding the spacebar let me start the OS and disable it permanently.
(In theory there might be a driver update that would fix the problem, but I seriously don't care about OS 9 so I never bothered.)

I fixed it. I had to go back to square one, reinstall everything. guess something got hosed somewhere.
as for upgrades, it's a wallstreet, so upgrading the video card would be very difficult (finding a new video controller that would fit, lots of soldering, burning a new rom with hand written drivers, etc.)
-digital
Ah. I wasn't really paying close attention and mixed up your later references to a "B&W" as being the subject of the OP.
Yeah, upgrading the video card in a Wallstreet would be a nontrivial task. ;^)

It's very strange that you have the same problem on two very different machines. Did you use the same OS 9 installation CD for both? Have you given Diskwarrior a shot at it?
the problem with my B&W is a bit more terminal. I have 2 mac OS 9 CDs. both retail. one is 9.0.4, one is 9.1. 9.0.4 boots and installs, but 9.1 freezes before the splash. even the installed 9.0.4 updated to 9.1+ freezes at the exact same point. I think it's some piece of hardware I have. either a USB device, one of my drives, or a piece of other hardware. I seem to remember unplugging everything a while back, and it booted 9.1+.
ah well, it's working fine.
my wallstreet must have not had the drivers installed, even thought I swore I installed them. must have corrupted somehow. it was also exhibiting another issue with the backlight cutting off right before the login screen (pressing the brightness key fixed it.). it would also do this coming out of sleep, but pressing the brighness key did not fix it. it all works now, however, after a freash reinstall.
macs are wierd like that. they are either rock solid, or do something bizzar. guess it's that personallity they all have

I had this problem on a PDQ too running XPostFacto and Tiger 10.4.11. Using an MCE EXbay Drive, here is the definite cure in a short note I wrote to myself for the next time it happens, I hope it helps.
How to Fix a PDQ when Mac OS 9.2.2 won't Boot
Problem discription:
When Mac OS 9.2.2 is installed on the second partition of a Hard Drive and Mac OS X (Especially 10.2.? is installed on the 1st under 8 GB partition and when the PDQ starts from a cold start after all power has been off, (it should default Boot into Mac OS 9.2.2) Instead the PDQ boots in to OS 9.2.2 only as far as the Mac 512k 'classic' 'Happy Mac' in the center of a blank grey screen, then the screen goes black , the start up chime is heard & then the PDQ Boost into Mac OS X 10 .2.?
Solution:
NOTE: I don't know if this helped; I first formatted the Hard Drive with OS 8.6 Drive SetUp, installed, (copied over a version of OS 9.2.2 from a Classic Bootable CD) onto the 2nd partition, then did an erase, re-format & install of Mac OS X (Jaguar) onto the 1st under 8 GB partition, from the Jaguar install CDs
1) Make sure that the Hard Drive with the troublesome installation of Mac OS 9.2.2 is installed inside the PDQ, (next to the processor).
2) Install a Hard Drive with ONLY ONE partition with Mac OS 8.6 installed on it into an MCE EXBAY Hard Drive.
3) insert this Hard Drive and StartUp from a cold Boot, (from ALL Power OFF, no batteries including PRAM). The PDQ will StartUp into Mac OS 8.6
4) Launch the StartUp Disk Control Panel & select the troublesome installation of Mac OS 9.2.2 and then LEAVE the StartUp Disk Control Panel OPEN and select SHUTDOWN from the Menu Bar.
5) Once the PDQ has completely shutdown and with the Power Cord still attached, REMOVE the MCE EXBAY Hard Drive with Mac OS 8.6 installed on it from the PDQ.
6) Push the Power Button and the PDQ will StartUp properly into Mac OS 9.2.2 from the formerly troublesome installation of Mac OS 9.2.2
