Installing latest Apple 2gs System Software

Hi,

I have purchased an Apple 2GS that I want to use to recover my old floppies from high school. However it has OS system 3 which I think is pre GS/OS and that's why it won't read the old DOS 3.3 disks. I checked the Apple web site, and there is 7 disks in total to install the latest version 6 of GS/OS. However the GS machine does not have a hard disk, so does anyone know the procedure on how to install and make a boot disk for an Apple 2GS from the latest system software on the Apple web site if they are running off a 800K floppy based system.

You don't need any of that. You can just get ADTPro and a serial cable and transfer all your old disks, whatever they were formatted with. See:

Hi

Thanks and that looks great! Do you know if it works with a USB to serial adapter on OS X and could it great a library of disk images that would be compatible with the Sweet16 Apple 2gs emulator?

It would be incredible to get everything transferred over to Mac OS X so it's preserved for ever!

Grant,

Yes ADTPro works with a USB to serial adapter on OS X, that's the exact setup I'm using to transfer disk images from My Mac Mini to my GS. Of course you'll need some type of null modem cable for the GS to plug into the modem port.

Yes again on the disk images it creates working with Sweet 16. Of course you can't use DOS 3.3 disks with GS/OS, but if you remember what program you used to create the data disks you can probably find a disk image of it on the web at the Asimov Archive, or somewhere else, and boot it in Sweet 16 and then read your disk images.

If you're wanting to transfer the data from them to something else you might try Copy II+. Depending on what format the data is you might be able to transfer it to a Prodos disk and then open it in GS/OS.

Hi, Thanks for the advice

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, and I will try and track down an old serial cable, and give it a try!

I had no idea there was such a large community of Apple 2 users out there still. I had thought my idea of getting an old Apple 2gs for checking out some of the software I wrote in my teenage years was a unique idea, but I was wrong!

If for whatever reason, the A

If for whatever reason, the ADT Pro doesn't work out, the method I use is to use ShrinkIt to compress the 5.25" disks and put them on an HFS 800k disk, which I then bring to a Mac Classic sitting next to the GS, and transfer onto a 1.4MB 3.5" disk, which I then bring over to my Mac mini which has a USB floppy drive. That's if I'm not networking, though. Takes longer, but just as good, I think.
