Magic Blue Smoke

Fedex delivered the Apple IIe yesterday. Hooked it up and all was working. Running some diagnostics and I saw (and heard) the puff of smoke coming from the power supply.

Turns out is was a capacitor. Looks like a bypass cap, .1 microfarad. There are two right up where the ac line enters the power supply chassis. Anyone know where to get a schematic of the IIe power supply ? Got a couple of replacement caps at Radio Shack, installed one and all seems to work, but would like to verify the caps function.

Think I'll send a note to Apple and complain about the failure. Heck, they're only 25 years old !!! Smile

The Apple II Reference manual

The Apple II Reference manual has a PS schematic. I'm pretty sure the exact same supply is used on the IIe.

PS schematic

Thank you, Mike.

And looking at the schematic doesn't help. Part values are not shown. Looks like this cap is part of the 'Line Filter'. Probably a low pass filter.

Anyhow, the IIe is working and that's a good thing.

What is that smell ???

I even thought about replacing both caps ....

A rousing game of Wolfenstein and poof ! The second cap explodes. This one really made a lot of smoke. Wife comes in and asks "What is that smell?"

And, I'm getting really fast at removing, repairing, replacing the power supply.

The moral, none really, other than if one goes bad the other is likely to as well.

Sounds like what you want is a copy of "SAM's Computerfacts" for the IIe. It has a schematic of the power supply, and (I'll have to check it to make sure) names for what goes where and why.

Check up on ebay every once in a while. A copy will come along, or you can Google "SAM's Computerfacts" and there will be several sites where you may be able to buy one for a reasonable price.
