New iMac will have a G5...

It's kind of unclear since the latest Af update, but rumors are frowned upon. Regardless of how rock solid someones "inside source" says it is.

This is not a rumour -- its publically discussed by Apple in the company's 3rd Qtr financial results.

Apple needs to get the G5 into the Powerbook line. Putting it in the iMac line is great for that line, but the Powerbooks are supposedly the highend business persons machine.

Apparently, IBM has been failing to ship the CPU's quickly enough for production, and that delayed the new iMac (a high failure rate in manufacturing reportedly now fixed). There are exciting prospects for this chip line, as a month or so back IBM announced that they discovered a way to cut heat out-put significantly (50%?) and/or double the speed.

Also in the previously mentioned financial report, Apple reported that computer sales are up 14% this quarter. The future looks bright. Any thoughts?

My bad, I hadn't seen Apple's "announcement". It's odd that Steve isn't putting more into his new product intros anymore.

From what I've heard, the G5 processor consumes too much power and runs too hot (a natural byproduct of the consuming too much) to be used in portables. IBM needs to do some work on the G5 chip to overcome those obstacles before they find their way into the PowerBook line.

Until that happens, I forsee Apple continuing to sell G4 laptops, but there will be incremental increases in processor speed and decreases in prices. I'm no prophet, but that seems to have been the natural evolution of the PowerBook/iBook line since the G5 was first introduced.

I know a lot of people want a PowerBook G5, but, (hold the flames) those that can actually use all the power a G5 supplies, don't need it to be portable. They need it to be on a big desk hooked up to two 30 inch displays.

I also don't see a problem with the iMac having a G5. The PowerMacs will now continue to have either dual procs or much higher clock rates than the single processor, relatively low clocked iMac.

It'd make alot of sense if Apple stuck all those 1.6GHz and 1.8Ghz G5 chips into iMacs. They wouldn't have a bunch of surplus chips that couldn't spec to higher clock rates if the iMac stayed under 2GHz.

i would trade my 15" 1ghz in immediatly for even a 1.6ghz 15".

I "love" reading predictive articles about computer equipment. I read one about two and a half years ago discussing the "fact" that the G5 processor was not going to be used in computers, as the architecture of the G6's blew it away perfomance wise, and was about 30-50 times faster then the (then current) G3 400MHz's. Has anyone heard anything about the G6's lately?
