I would like to know the full release date of Mac OS X 10.5 and the system requirements. The fastest Macintosh machine in my house is my Power Macintosh G3 B&W running at 450 MHz. I am thinking about upgrading to a G4 if OS 10.5 will not run on a G3. My next computer will probably be a Mac Pro. If anyone knows the release date and system requirements, please tell me. Thank you.

That is not going to be fast enough. The number I have heard kicked around here is 1 GHz (G4 obviously). Don't know when the release date is.
I happen to have a 1 GHz G4 machine, but I don't think I'll be putting 10.5 on it (as beautiful as it looks). I suspect that that Mac Pro you're thinking about is going to be the ticket.

1. Apple hasn't announced the release date yet, but popular opinion is that it'll be sometime late this month.
2. You'll need at least a G4 system to run Leopard. Upgrade cards likely won't be supported, though people may write helper apps to force an install of Leopard on these machines.
well i think leopard is going to block any stock systems that is running under G4 867mhz and then its going to do a Machine ID check to see if its a Apple shipped 867mhz+ system.
there is allot of talk in macrumors and other places about why Apple is dumping support for so many systems even tho they are capable of running leopard just fine
found some info here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_v10.5
leopard is the OS X version that say's bye bye to G3 systems. i have seen talks to try and make a G3 run leopard , but that is if it has G3 code in it, if it dont then a G3 will never run leopard. if they somehow leave G3 code in it then running it on a G3 system is a possibility.
i just got a Digital Audio G4 533, even tho i will be upgrading the CPU to dual G4 1.4ghz leopard will still not install cause of the Machine ID is telling leopard the system is still a Digital audio. but that can be worked around. if you ask me i dont think Apple should be locking out systems that can run leopard. yes they should put a system requirements in it and tell people if you run under these requirements then you might not see good system performance as a result. and not lock out systems like they are going to do.
this is killing off allot of systems that could run leopard
The surest way of killing all pre-G4 machines is requiring AltiVec on PPC systems. No need to fiddle with G3 code as a simple check for AltiVec in the kernel will keep it from booting. If this is the case it may be possible to update something like XPostFacto to patch the kernel.
well everything is official, October 26 is the release date and 867mhz G4 minimum to install leopard.
I might save up for a new Mac Pro machine. I don't feel like buying an old machine then having to upgrade it to run certain software that needs a fast processor.
the 867mhz requirement is a virtual limit Apple deliberately put into place. but non the less i think it all requires a G4 or better to run. it was 800mhz but at the last minute they bumped it to 867mhz so they could vintage out a complete G4 model instead of half of it.
10.4 doesn't run particuarly well on a 864MHz G4, so I'm not surprised that Apple didn't put the minimum specs below that. Yes, it's an artificial limit, and yes, it will be circumvented, but it isn't like this is the first time Apple has cut off systems. They did it with most G3s with Tiger, and they did it with everything before the G3 when OS X and OS 9.2 came out.
my install of 10.4.10 fly's on my DA G4 which is a 533mhz model. and tiger runs well on my Beige G3 AIO (in my sig).
it seems as tho someone from Macrumors modded the installer for Leopard so it will install on unsupported systems.
just spreading the word
Guide: Install Leopard on older Macs
a attempt is going to be made to see if the GM (gold master) will install and run on a G3 system from someone on Macrumors.
They are
867 Mhz G4 Processor
512 MB Minimum RAM
DVD Drive
and something like 6-12 GB of HD Space
the release date is the 26th of this month.
Sorry but probably with a sonnet upgrade 10.5 wouldn't run on you're system all G3's are unsupported but really for performance I wouldn't run it on anything less than a 1 Ghz+ G4
and good choice the Mac Pro rocks pure computing power.
not going with a sonnet (7447) cpu upgrade. i am getting a dual 7455 fastmac upgrade, a few of my friends have diffrent models of the 7455 and a few with a sonnet 7447 and dont have any issues with installing tiger with it installed, so i would think that Leopard would not either. with that installer mod it will install on a slower G4 with no issues, cause it removes the virtual speed limit and removes the Machine ID check.
as for the G3 test ( yes i know its not with the GM release), it wont even install with the modded installer, they must have removed the G3 binary. oh well i wasn't planning on installing Leopard on a G3 anyway. someone is already running Leopard on a GBE G4 on MR and they said its runs OK but it has the stock rage 128 card in it.
here is the link to it

but i think a G4 upgraded G3 would run Leopard, ( maybe not great to use) but should run, and install once you mod the installer which removes the virtual speed block and the Machine ID check. (as long as they are new world).
