We have an LC 575 at school and I think that the hard drive is dead. Whenever I boot it up is displays the blinking question mark and I tried to reinstall the system software and it cannot find the hard drive whenever I click switch disk in the install process. If I do have to replace the hard drive, how would I do that? I remember that everything is on an easy to remove "tray" type thing and I figured out how to remove the door on the back, but from there I have no clue. Any help is appreciated. Thanks a million!

Its not too hard a job. First and foremost, you need to gauge your own technical abilities and decide if you wouldnt rather hand the job off to a service place.
The LC has the video inside the case, and CRT's hold a lot of electricity even when they've been off for some time. Be extremely careful.
You will need the PDF from the apple service source CD for the LC 575. I would be happy to email it to you, it has detailed info on takeapart, pictures, safety info, all you need.

Replacing the HDD in an LC575 is *very* easy, and you don't go anywhere near the CRT (in fact, it's never exposed). All you need to do, literally, is remove the rear motherboard cover panel and slide out the hard drive. It's mounted to a sled and has a plug-in edge connector. Screw the sled to the new drive, plug in the edge connector, and slide the new drive in.
The first thing I would check, though, is if the hard drive really is bad. Grab a boot floppy and see if the hard drive is still recognized. If it is, just reformat and reinstall the OS.
Your computer "clock battery" is probably dead. Sometimes it's referred to as a "PRAM battery." I just had exactly the same problem with an old Performa 575 that I had donated to a friend to use for daycare kids and the battery finally wore out after 12 years or so of age. The batteries cost about $6 to $10 each and they are very easy to replace. Here's are links to 2 stores with a photo of it and they sell them for $7.99.

You might get them at a computer store also. It's a 4.5V ALKALINE Battery. After removing the cover on the back of the computer (a couple of screws and then it snaps out), you can grab and slide out the whole motherboard, which has the battery on it with a plug-in connector. The motherboard had to be pulled firmly out and pushed back in firmly, because slots go into a tight fitting.
