Two things: Spammers and Slow Forum

There's a spammer running loose on the forum. Get 'im! http://www.applefritter.com/user/21725

Also, is there a reason why it takes 30+ seconds for the forum page to parse on the server? Sub-pages (threads and sub-fora) load quickly, but the main page (http://www.applefritter.com/forum/) always takes 30+ seconds to load on all my Macs (ranging from PCI PowerMacs to dual 1 GHz G4, so it isn't a client-side problem).

What's up?

Peace,
Drew

Don't reply

It just makes cleaning the crap up harder.

Someone *really* needs to lock down registrations somehow. Or put in a filter that looks for the words "blow job" in posts and automatically disables the user. *sigh*

It's worth noting that these gibberish posts are from bots, so your replies are never going to be seen by the spammer.

Bots? Really? No kidding. ;

Bots? Really? No kidding. Wink

That's pretty obvious, really. As for my replies, I was just being funny. They aren't intended for the spammer, they are commentary intended for the other readers. If we can't poke fun at spammers, then we're really being beaten by them.

If my replies make cleaning up the forum harder, I apologize. On the other hand, perhaps the problem with cleaning up spam posts is that the forum uses DRUPAL...

Do either of you have any ideas why it takes 30+ seconds for the server to send out the forum page?

Peace,
Drew

That is the main reason I use

That is the main reason I use AF through the http://www.applefritter.com/tracker page, and not the main forum page. It loads *much* faster.

right, but what if you want to create a new forum topic? then I guess you are SOl and have to wait for it to load.

what is the software the forum uses? I know the old one used YaBB, which loaded much quicker. Perhaps we could switch to PhpBB? That's my favorite forum software, or Invision Power board, I have only used version 1.3 final, and it's not bad, unless you have a lot of users.

and the spammer situation is getting out of hand. Now it seems we get one at least once a week. How hard it is to install a catchspa (sp)? I know that won't weed out all spammers, but 99% of them.

Nope. I go over to that menu on the left and select "create content" then "forum topic" and then fill in the form.
