there an mpeg 2 codec out there for os 9? that or a player? i have an xcaret pro drive on the way that i'm upgrading with a sony dvd drive, but my wallstreet of course doesn't have the dvd decoder card. i really don't care to pay $60 just for it. any options without having to install os x?

hope it helps :]
Didn't notice that at first. Lucky are you, those things are scarce as hens' teeth (as you know!)
You asked me in a message about other drives - the mechanism in the MCE drive can be swapped out for just about any slim optical you want. Me, I'd say go with a superdrive (eg: this Sony mechanism for $49.)
The original MCE CD/RW or combo drive mechanism isn't going to be as fast as a new drive.
But . . . no new, faster drive will allow a Wallstreet to smoothly play DVDs, the CPU just ain't fast enough to do it. The only sure-fire way to get decent DVD playback is to boot into classic MOS and use the hardware decoder PC card.

yes, i am considering the decoder card now. before that, i will try vlc player on ubuntu on the old hard drive and see how that plays. i might consider a dual boot system if it seems to work well. the drive is giving me an odd error when i try to burn cds. should i try toast?
