Need help for class assignment: Does anyone know how "apple" became this company's name?
I'm taking an into class to Macs and I am considering purchasing one. I am a long time MS-DOS/PC-DOS/Windows user.
thanks!

sorry...I'm taking an INTRO class to Macs
Try looking around on http://www.folklore.org
Thank you! I found the info in an article titled "Bicycle"
That article is about the Macintosh... not the company name.
About "Apple," I've heard 2 stories... one is that The Steve really likes the Beatles, so he used the name of their record company as homage, and the other is that Steve used to work in an apple orchard, and... was overwhelmed with nostalgia for it.
I have read somewhere that Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak used the wood of apple boxes to build a few cases for the first apple I. At the time of the apple I there where a lot of apple farmers in the Silicon Valley today. Another version is that apple was good placed in the telephon book because it was in alphabetic order first to atari.
SchwindS
was that's the name SJ's daughter gave when he asked her for a company name.
I don't buy it. If all the rumors of Steve Jobs' personality are true, he definitely doesn't seem like the sentimental type.
But then again, there's the Lisa...
Peace,
Drew
Easiest debunking *ever*.

Born May 17, 1978. One year, four months, and a little change after "Apple Computer Inc." was incorporated.
With your good friend Google at your side you too can avoid making dumb statements on the internet. ;^)

I am sure it is the story when he worked in an apple orchard.
version 1: Steve Jobs told his team that if they could not think of a good name for their new company, he would name it "Apple"....the rest is history...
Why Apple?: Steve Jobs was a fruitarian and his favourite fruit was...
Steve Jobs was a fruitarian?
Them's fight'n words!
Was he on one of those underwear commercials?
I think this image says more than I could on this subject.
That first logo was drawn by the seldom-mentioned third founding partner of Apple, Ron Wayne, who, apparently, the young Steve used to have long late night conversations with about business ethics. I've actually got the whole scene constructed in my mind as to how the Apple name came about--Act II, Scene IV of the birth of Apple movie--involving Mr. Wayne, but I've not had the time to write it out before someone else will probably beat me to the punch. The most obvious metaphor is the one right in our face which the graphic designer, Rob Janoff, came up with for the Apple logo that we've come to know and love--the apple of Knowledge offered by the soon-to-be-seen-as-comely Eve--the original sin which, as we know, slipped serpentine into our laps, and has that computer of ours whispering eternally to us with its binary forked tongue. If you think I play too much with the metaphor, consider this: the original price of the Apple II--$666.
Personally, I prefer Blake's Newton:

It's a shame how his pathologically deformed spine prevents him from being able to put on pants before going out for a night of wild drinking and Trigonometry.

But it sure doesn't prevent him from maintaining superb muscle tone.
... didn't extend to the dimensions of Newton's left arm. Or are we to believe that overuse of that arm led to hypertrophy?
