I've been wanting to speed up my G3 for a long time. I'm afraid that if I overclock it, I will mess up and it will fry. Do the G4 processors work on Mac G3's? If so, please tell me.

what G3 do you have? Beige? B&W? iMac? iBook? PowerBook?
More specifics, please. Which G3 do you have? There are many G3 based models with different upgrade paths.
"It depends" is the short answer.
Many G3s can be upgraded to a G4. The B&W G3 and the beige G3 will accept G4 processor upgrades (3rd party) up to 1 GHz, and they will also work with Apple OEM Yikes! G4 CPU modules from the very first generation PowerMac G4. But other than that very limited set of Apple processors, the G4 in newer Macs is incompatible with the older G3 motheboards - they physically will not fit.
PowerBook G3 Wallstreet, Lombard, and Pismo can all be upgraded to a 3rd party G4 processor (up to 550 MHz), but no PowerBook G4's processor can be used in a PowerBook G3. Ditto for iMacs.
iBooks are not processor upgradeable.
So, "it depends." Which model Macintosh G3 are you working with?
Peace,
Drew
I have a B&W G3. It has a 400mhz processor
in a B&W all you have to do is update the firmware with the modded one to be able to use the G4 cause apple made a firmware which blocks you from upgrading the B&W G3 to a G4 cause of the yikes G4 is basicly has the same mobo as the B&W
there is a few places that have that firmware but i forget where. i think all you have to do is run a google search for B&W G3 firmware for a G4 cpu
i think OWC has it or sonnet has it but i can be wrong
not to mention you need a copy of OS 9 or 8 running on your hard drive. OS X and classic mode won't work. you launch the app from within OS 9, it reboots, and you hold the programmers switch until you hear a long tone, and then you will see a progress bar.
