Hi guys,
As you might have read in some of my other postings, I'm slowly resurrecting an upgraded Color Classic, which is currently working well, with 32 megs of RAM, a 2gb external HDD and an external AppleCD 600i drive. I've been transferring files from my MacBook Pro via CD-R (thanks to those that helped me figure out the disc formatting issues!), and I've bought an ethernet card from eBay which should be arriving in a few days - Internet, here I come!
Whenever I get the itch to play around with my old Macs, the 68kMLA, AppleFritter and Jag's House are usually the first places to go for good ideas, so I thought I'd throw out a question (and apologies in advance if this has been covered before):
Where are the best sources for 'classic' Mac software/shareware/freeware? I spent a little while digging around on Google last night, and I found a lot of pages that link to other, (now dead) repositories, but it seems like there must be a few really well-stocked websites or ftp servers that I just didn't stumble across. I'm not saying that I didn't find some cool stuff ("The Mac Garden" is hosting a lot of classic games - I was up waaay too late last night playing Oregon Trail for the first time in years!), but I can't shake the feeling that I'm missing some good leads.
Also, on the same topic, what are some of your "must have" old software picks? While I was stumbling around on Google, I came across the official website of "Cap'n Magneto" and I was blown away - I haven't seen that game since I was a kid! I'll admit now that I'm mostly focused on old games right now, but if you can suggest any particular programs to look for, I'd appreciate it.
I hope this post wasn't too rambling to make sense,
Huxley
I think Jag's house is THE resource, and has been for years.

I also rely on macorchard for older mac internet related software, used to be really great but may have moved to newer software without the older stuff still available. But worth a look.

I have also been a hotline user since the very first release, I was into the "scene" back then. You can find a lot of older hotline sites with focus on 68k and Mac OS software. Its a little harder to get set up, but definitely the domain of hard core older mac enthusiasts. Check out this project for a more modern client version: http://www.lorbac.net/
On another note, I can personally recommend keeping an eye out for the Sonnett Presto Plus card for your Color Classic. I bought one years ago, from time to time Sonnett sells one on ebay (so said the tech I bought it from) its really great. Adds Quadra speed, 32 MB ram, and onboard ethernet in one upgrade.
good luck, keep us posted.

Thanks for the tips - especially the Sonnet Presto Plus idea, which is great! One question about that upgrade - if I find one with the lower-end 68LC040 chip (the one without an FPU), can I swap it for the full-on 68040? Just wondering...
Thanks again,
Huxley
as for software, ftp://ftp.uu.net/systems/mac/info-mac . info-mac arch. very useful.
