partially upgrade, partially repair. everyone knows about my fried wallstreet and my conquest to find a new processor, and all i can find right now is the sonnet creschendo g3 card. first off, does this need software to install? i can't exactly do that without a working processor in the computer. and for anyone who has it, is it any good? lastly, what else is there that i haven't found that might be more stable or a better value? i don't care about my powerbook's existing bottlenecks. i want to keep mine running for the sake of saying i have a ten year old powerbook that still runs well.

I'm sure there is software needed for the Sonnet card and can be downloaded from their site. But as you mentioned it needs to be installed first. At least the manufacturer says it needs to.
I have installed Sonnet cards in PCI Macs without the software first and had no problems, but a Wallstreet upgrade may be different.
I had a Wallstreet with a 500MHz G3 and it ran well. Is it worth it ? Depends on what it costs.
If you need a CPU I have on old one (233 no cache) you are welcome to so you won't have to worry about hosing something. leave me a message and I'll send it to you.
yea i read about the installer. apparently the bluechip processor (this seems similar enough) requires a utility to be run to copy the processor's rom onto the the hard drive for the new processor to access on the first boot. i would borrow your 233 processor, but my machine is a 250 and i have no idea if the 233 processor will have full compatability with the machine due to different bus speeds.
Hmmmm, I do believe it will not work in the 250MHz Wallstreet. But I'm not positive, and it's been a while since I dove into Wallstreet models and their individual compatibility with other models.
Anyone know for sure ?
i'll see if maybe my school has a wallstreet 250 sitting around that they will at least allow me to use the processor long enough to boot it and run the utility. they have macs that are still yet to be replaced by pcs, but i don't see why they should have anything against me using a processor card to ten minutes.
