Does anybody else get a "404 not found" error when they try and go to 68kmla?

That's a shame

The PPCMLA is still online, though. And it's got it's own brand new domain!

This might tide you over for a bit:

Nope. I've been a member there for about three years, though.

meh

it's just a site. the IRC room is up. #68kmla on freenode, if anyone want's to join.

plus, alot of folks from there are also regulars here. I know that's how it was for me. i've been a member here for quite a long time, then I got turned onto the mla almost a year ago.

and, since it's Saturday, we may be looking at a full weekend outage.

According to tomlevens, the server 68kmla was hosted on died. it is housed at a datacenter. a bunch of other sites hosted off the same servers died as well. Fortunantly, there are backups. as soon as he gets in touch of the person responsible for server 209 (the one 68kmla is hosted on), they are either going to see if they can get it back up, or he is going to have them send the backup to him, and he will host it off a temporary server.

hope that fixes everyone's curiosity. essentailly, it was a hard drive crash.

Explaining...

Basically, the hosting providers server (Machine 201) went dead. I have reason to believe the disk just went awry, because it was under a 404 for a while until we saw the vDeck Hosting Control Panel reappear, indicating the machine is working but the data is basically gone.

Never fear, if iPowerWeb are as good as they claim to be, they'll have a backup. And afaik, iPowerWeb are really good.

FreeNode has the community backed up with the now official IRC channel, #68kmla on irc.freenode.net. I've also allocated some of my server space to the MLA WebIRC at http://tinyurl.com/2b8xvx, and my other server had a temp 68kMLA on it (complete with theme), but Alk still has the PPCMLA and it serves to the purpose well.

I encourage the 68kMLA users to take a look over at the IRC channel. It's a great place to be and it really fills the void with the forums currently down.

Cheers

ah, 201, not 209. sorry. this old mind has lapses sometimes. Hopefully they can get it up soon. It's been nearly a week, so i'm thinking it's some major failure. have the backups arrived yet, ready to go on a temporary server, or is tom going to bypass that plan and just try to get the main server functional again?

There was movement at the station ...

Instead of the placeholder there is now, true to the 68K theme and ethos, a Sad Mac on a black field. The two-line error code (an '030?) tells us that the error is ... ERROR 404.

Update Info...

The 68kMLA is on Tomlevens server, afaik, instead of the now former iPowerWeb one. (I assume it's former anyway)

I myself contacted iPowerWeb with the issue. I've seen IRC buzz with guesses and just decided to find out for myself. So, they told me to speak to Cinemafia as it's the website admin's fault, not theirs! Well, I don't think Cinemafia would have deleted it, so perhaps they're shifting the blame over...

Anyway, from what I now know, they do have backups, and it's just taking a while to get it started again.

In Local News...

I have a QuickTake 150. Liberated it a few days ago. It's very nice, running really well, came with the entire kit. Pics over at http://picasaweb.google.com/imac600x/QuickTake.

Just days before I was going to post a metric butt-load of old Mac stuff for sale, too. Without 68kMLA, I have no market base! Biggrin Oh well, this gives me a little extra time to clean up the inventory list.

yup

I sometimes forget, since the forums here are so much quieter than MLA.

Hopefully I'll be posting "the goods" within the week. Several 68k machines, tons of software, some miscellany too. Cash is nice, but I'd really like to score a Q800 or Q650, so if you have an extra one, this is your heads-up.

Down forever?

I too am concerned that 68kMLA may be down for good. It was mentioned in this thread that the site coming down was the result of a server HD crash but that all the data had been backed up. If that were true, it shouldn't take much more than a week to get it back online, even if moving it to another server on another host. I therefore think it must be a problem with the admins of the site and/or their lack of funds to support it. But if that is true, then they ought to have the decency to put up a web page and report that to all of us, because many in this thread have expressed the willingness to financially bring back the site, if the admins would only listen.

So I like others here have fundamental doubts as to whether it will come back at all.

it would be weird if after all these years the admins just threw in the towel.

i suppose it is a hobby to them all and they could simply be busy, but i agree an offical statement would be good.
without that, they may be able to bring it back online, but will the site need to start from scratch?

I wish it would just get started up again. If we lose the continuity with history then too bad. They've taken that approach once before.

we can all remember how long the 'Fritter was down after we got hacked. Grant it there was a splash page up and mention of server upgrades (on 68kmla) by those in the know.

I'm not thinking they are at

I'm not thinking they are at a loss for funding, but if they are, I can pledge $10. If they need it, I can probably help out with whatever they need. But I don't think this is the problem. If cashflow were the problem, we wouldn't be seeing the 403 page as the site would be off the air completely.

Before you pay

I think we need to consider whom to contact before pledging anything. Clearly, the owners of 68kmla are not viewing this forum or they would have replied. And since they haven't even taken 120 seconds to post a simple HTML web page explaining the problem or what they are doing, I think we are forced to assume "utter apathy" on the part of the site owners. I'm mean, what else is one to think in light of their total silence on this subject?
