In my exploration of Apple II emulators, I'm interested in looking again at WordPerfect on the IIe/IIc. It's been released into the public domain, but the only files I can find are ones that end with .sdk.
There's some stuff about nulib for converting these, but it's beyond my technical ken.
Is there an easy way of converting the WP.sdk files to .dsk?
Or, even better, does anyone know of a direct .dsk download?
Sure. CiderPress (http://www.faddensoft.com/ciderpress/index.htm) will make a direct translation between .sdk and .dsk.
It's been a while and I am back exploring Apple II emulators.
Cider Press only runs under Windows, right?
Anyone have any ideas of how to convert sdk or shk files to dsk files for the Macintosh?
Or know where to find Word Perfect in dsk format?
I found something called nulib but haven't found anything that explains how to configure it! There's no GUI and my weak attempts at using the Terminal haven't gotten me anywhere!
I've tried to find a dsk copy of WordPerfect for the IIe/IIc with no luck. What I finally ended up with was a copy of WordPerfect IIe/IIc that I installed on a hard disk image for KEGS an Apple IIGS emulator. If you'd like I can e-mail you the emulator and the files for it so you can access WordPerfect IIe/IIc on your Mac.
Another option, if you've actually got sdk files for all the disks for WordPerfect IIe/IIc would be to e-mail those to me and I can unshrink them and send you the dsk images, or even actual disks if you've got a IIe or IIc you'd like to run it on.
Dean
Dean, that'd be great!
The IIe/IIc WordPerfect that I found is at the copyright owner's web page-- where he announced it's now public domain.
http://www.apple2.org.za/gswv/a2zine/Sel/WordPerfectPD.html
The actual zip file link is
http://www.apple2.org.za/gswv/a2zine/Misc/WordPerfect2e2c_May2001.zip
It unzips to a file titled WP2e2c.shk which is where I end up getting lost!
Should I send you that--or can you just click on the zip file link and get it yourself? Once we've turned this into a dsk image, we should probably send it to the person behind the web site as it would be great to have it posted for everyone to download!
I presume I can click on your name to get to an e-mail address. I'll try that, too!
I've actually got those files already and unshrunk them to a hard disk image for an Apple IIGS emulator. Unfortunately I haven't discovered which files would go on which disk images to make up the complete disk image set. The Apple IIGS emulator I'm running it on is KEGS, I can e-mail you the complete emulator, ROM image and HD image so you can at least access WordPerfect through a IIGS emulator on your Mac, if you'd like.
Dean
Dean, there's only one WordPerfect file that results.
WP2e2c.shk Why don't I e-mail that to you? It's the WP designed for the IIc/IIe series... and down the road, if I get the real physical IIc, I could use the WP 2e/2c version rather than the GS.
I private messaged you about this.
Dean, I ended up finding the IIgs versions of Word Perfect and Beagle Write at http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/the_ring/application_pages/word_perfect.html
What's great is that they come in 2img files and so are directly readable by GS emulators, e.g., Sweet 16!
Sweet 16 is really sweet... a Mac OS X interface, much more user friendly than KEGS.
Of course, what I'd still like to figure out is how to go from .shk to .dsk files. (My original title on this thread about .sdk was off.)
I did figure out Terminal commands and nulib2. I'll post those in another thread. I unpacked (expanded) the WordPerfect 2e 2c .shk file-- what results is an 804K fiel titled simply WordPerfect!
It's not readable by any of the emulators I've tried.
There must be a way of converting it to a ProDOS disk... I believe, as you posted elsewhere, that WP came on several 5.25" diskettes... whether those are buried inside this archive... or whether it's actually an 800K disk-- e.g. for an Apple IIC+, I just don't know.
I still haven't found any place on the web that walks an illiterate through the process of going from an shk to a dsk on a Mac. It's truly frustrating. There's so much out there but most of it seems to skirt just around the key process, the key steps!
In another of my efforts, I expanded a BeagleWrite shrunk file and it expanded into dozens of smaller files. How those individual files get packaged into a 5.25" diskette is another mystery!
In any event, thanks for all your help. If you ever figure out how to convert that WPIIeIIc shk file I sent you to disk images let me know!
Hello everybody! I'm an Apple II enthusiast from Brazil, and quite a neophyte at it. My english skills are also limited, so please excuse any of the errors I'm sure I'll make.
I own an original enhanced Apple //e, with two 5.25 drives, a green screen monitor, parallel and serial cards, a modem and a dot matrix printer. I have ADTPro, CiderPress and Applewin installed on my PC, plus heaps of blank 5.25 diskettes, to which I have transfered a lot of useful and fun software I found on the Internet. I also have an old HP Deskjet 500c printer laying arround, and I thought it would be nice to use it with my Apple, so as to get high(ish) quality printed output.
I remember reading somewhere that WordPerfect had HP Deskjet drivers, and how it's supposed to be the most powerful word processor for the 8 bit Apple, so recently I downloaded the ShrinkIt! archive containing Word Perfect for the IIe & IIc v1.1 that someone kindly released into the public domain. But then I've stumbled on the same problem faced by an earlier poster. You see, by now I'm used to turning ShrinkIt archives into disk images and then into actual 5.25 disks, but only if the .shk file holds the contents of a single disk. Multiple disk programs are a different thing, and I'm having a hard time trying to fit the WordPerfect files into actual disks. I have no idea which files go into each disk, or even how many disks I'll need. If I had mass storage, or even an 3.5" disk drive there wouldn't be a problem, but alas that's not my case.
Has anybody solved this puzzle yet? Or perhaps found the WordPerfect disk images somewhere? How about HP Deskjet drivers for AppleWorks? I have the faintest memory of reading about that a long time ago, but then again It could've been a dream. Any thoughts?
Luiz Augusto.
Greetings,
I've still got the disk images that I was able to sort Word Perfect onto for the IIe/c. If you'd like a copy just let me know and I'll e-mail it to you. then you can transfer them back to real disks for your computer.
Dean
Oh, that would be great! I'll send you my e-mail via private message. Thanks a lot!
Luiz
Luiz,
Did you get the e-mail I sent you with the copy of Word Perfect?
Dean
Though I already thanked Dean by e-mail, I felt bad leaving this thread hanging loose. So -- lest anyone reading this thinks I'm an ungrateful leech -- thanks again Dean!
