Sears

It actually doesn't have to be tamper-proof Torx -- just a #15 Torx (T15) with a 6" shank.

Sears carries them in most of their stores for about $7 US. Craftsman part #47181

part number 41871, too. On

part number 41871, too.

One small thing I've noticed with the CII; of all the compact Macs I've encountered, the CII has bee the most difficult to get apart even after removing the case screws... both halves of the plastic molding stick together pretty tightly, so take caution when trying to remove the back, you don't want to drop the front half back on your floor/table as you pick up the back or something Blum 3

that's a dead hard drive

when hard drives click over and over, it means there is a hardware failure. You will need to get a new Hard drive

Boot from floppy!

It only clicks once or twice then stops but you can still hear it spinning. But then the floppy logo comes on screen with a "?" on it!!
Is there a way i could boot straight from the floppy not waiting for the HD to try loading the OS??

Stay forewarned

I assume you've got important files on the HD that you don't want to lose? Personally, I wouldn't start up that HD again until you start a plan of recovery. If it's only clicking once or twice, then you may have a window of opportunity to get stuff off it before the HD is gone for good. I would transfer it to another Mac as a secondary HD and see if it will mount on the other machine, or possibly use an external SCSI drive to boot the CII from. If you can get it to mount either way, and still can't get files off, Diskwarrior sometimes can recover stuff. Heed those telltale signs of a dying HD early on and backup your files often, especially the older the drive becomes. You don't want to have to speak from experience like some of the rest of us, but actually, it sounds like you've reached that point already.

Remove the hard drive, clean

Remove the hard drive, clean it with compressed air, seal it in a plastic bag and let it sit in the freezer for 3 or 4 hours. Yes I have seen this work. More often than not it allows you to use the hard drive for a short time after you take it out, and sometimes it totally fixes them. But you have to use it as soon as you can when you take it out of the freezer.

Be careful!

If you don't know already, the insides of compact Mac can seriously shock you. I think I've seen somewhere a webpage that details opening a compact Mac and removing the HD--maybe at XLR8yourmac.com. I think you basically have to avoid touching anything under the paper cover you'll find inside, but others here probably can give you better warnings.

The torx is a screwdriver. It just has the star shaped end which fits the screws on the CII. They use those kinds of screws in an attempt to keep laymen from trying to get into the case.

That's the name of the screwdriver type: Torx. Just like there are standard (slotted), Phillips (x or + shaped), Robertson (square shaped), and Allen (hex shaped) screwdrivers, there are also Torx (six-pointed-star shaped) screwdrivers. The size you need is a Torx 15, or T15.

Get thee hence to a Sears store and ask for one. Give one of the Craftsman part numbers listed above -- they'll have it.

Just call around and ask if they've got a Torx 15/T15 screwdriver. They should know what it is. It's not a special order from NASA.

You do need a long and thin T15. At least 6". I personally have not seen one of these in any store, though I have never tried sears. Just order the one I linked to in my first post, it's the exact one I use, it's really cheap, it's good quality and works perfectly.

I never had to buy one of the long shanked ones. There was a short one in one of those sets of various bits you can buy cheap, and I just put it at the end of an thin extension for my ratchet.

I bought one of the cheap one

I bought one of the cheap ones, and dremelled a small slot in it for a flathead screwdriver.

On the hard drive...
If it clicks, try giving it a little smack when you first power on, it will help it spin up.

You need a bigass torx screwd

You need a bigass torx screwdriver if I remember correctly. I believe that is the correct term for them, so when you go to the store, ask for a bigass torx screwdriver.
