I installed XP today for the first time and I'm appalled at how clumsy, crude, cumbersome and archaic was the process. And fugly. Damn installer is just plain fugly as can be.

Hasn't M$ taken any notice how simple and elegant OS X is to install?
I've been using win2k for ages on my gaming PC, all games (until now) have run fine on that older system. I've been jonesing though to play Splinter Cell 4, but it needs XP, won't run on win2K. Bastards. Anyway, so I finally acquired XP pro. What a horrid experience. I mean, I can deal with the similar win2K install experience, but fer cryin' out loud, this is 2007. Can't M$ make things any more elegant than this horror scene?

Granted, all you are looking at is a GUI for installation. who cares what the installation looks like, as long as the GUI for the OS looks good? Oh, wait... nvm...

Vista installs in about half of the time that it takes to install XP; installing Vista is a much less foreign experience than installing XP or 2000 due to the GUI.
I have installed it 4 different times on 3 machines (2x on my own due to problems) and it took longer than XP to install on all of those machines. And they were all in the "recommended" area as top-line to run Vista.
It is 2007, but XP is from 2001.
Vista install speed is directly proportional to hardware speed. I built a Core 2 Duo box for myself at work, and with 2GB RAM the Vista install flies. Then, for grins, I built a virtual Vista machine under VMWare on an 8-core Xeon server, and it installed stupid fast. (As a reference, when I build a virtual Server 2003 machine on that server, the OS installs in about 10 minutes, start to finish.)
So if you're complaining about how slow Vista is to install, buy a new computer. Vista eats RAM for breakfast and asks for seconds.
Heh, yeah, but this is a recent release CD, stamped sometime in the last year or so. This is 2007 after all, original release date notwithstanding. What the hell has M$ been doing with all those zillions in profit for the last 6 years anyhow?!!?
FWIW, I know, I'm spoiled. But Apple has had relatively sleek and easy installers since OS 7 from the early nineties and OS X is only better than ever. Why is M$ still selling such a mess? Don't they update anything on that POS OS? Well, other than the latest security-hole-fillers . . .
Good thing I didn't pay much for such a piece of junk. Near as I can see it offers exactly nothing more than is in win2k. Well, except for whatever little bit of code Ubisoft just had to use for SCDA. Heh, SCDA multiplayer works fine on win2k BTW, so why the single player version just had to require XP I haven't yet figured out. Rat bastards.

ive had to reformat and reinstall XP on my machine so many times i have the serial number memorized and the entire install process takes about 25 minutes tops....
here's a funny bit of trivia: the Windows XP installer is the same one used in Windows 3.1 (the text mode part)!! from what I have seen, the vista one is fully graphical, which is good for first time users.
I used an early build (RC1 I think) in virtual PC, and it was dog slow to load the installer. it probibly didnt help I'm using it on a 400mhz G3, which runs XP slow. I get decent speed from 98SE though, and I use that as my primary transOSmigification.

It sucks, I had the same problem with games and had to get XP because 2KPro wouldn't run one of the games I had. Smart move.... purchase $150.00 software to run a $10.00 freaking game I got off eBay.......
And they say Macs are expensive ! HA !
And speed ! Jeeez.... I can install Jag or Panther on a B&W 300MHz G3 much faster than XP Pro on my AMD 1.5GHz Athlon.
And don't you just love the Crayola crayon look of the OS ?
First thing I do is change the hideous green and blue XP look to their Silver appearance setting and it's almost tolerable. I don't gag looking at it anyway.
I like to take the desktop and set it to Black, leave the blue, and it looks Kinda cool. Although, when i first got XP, i hated the eye-sickening colored candy. I eventually found a way to life with it and make it cool. When i need speed though, i got back to the 2k Interface. still keeps high res icons, but loses the overdose on eyecandy
Ya know, I just acquired my first XP machine yesterday. It's a Compaq Armada 7800, and I was very happy to see it boot right up and not be wiped (I got it in a free lot of stuff from Craigslist) and the previous owner didn't even set a password. SO, a quick addition of a new admin account in my name, and let's start some Windows updates. Drat, WGA says it's an install with one of the super common leaked corporate product keys.
No CD-ROM module, so its up to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/install.exe to get something legal on there. Didn't work, so I'll have to try the Debian Windows installer next.
If it was setup like OS X, I wouldn't even need a key to run the OS legally. If I end up finding a CD module soon, I can completely dump the current mess that s XP.
(and I do agree that the Silver theme is better, but the Classic theme is best)
do you really notice a speed difference if you change everything back to WIN2k?? with my setup ive got it tweaked alot, using a whole seperate HD for page file, it screams... its sad though, winxp has grown on me as far as its functionality goes. I just hate how fast the OS can go to hell and makes me reformat so much.....
The Silver theme was my favorite until I discovered the black Zune theme that MS has on its website. That along with a steel-grayish desktop picture with a big X on it for my Dell XP at work (for you know what) throws people totally off.
On a similar subject, does anyone know of "low taxing" eye-candy software for either XP or 2K? I really want to make it look better.

After moving all my data drives off to a server I just built, I have more free-experimentation with my system. I just installed Vista (again) and after finding out, since it's been out long enough, Everything works much like in XP. But I have been digging the Aero theme. And the fact that I have that new Video card (Radeon 9550 256MB flashed to a 9600 Pro and OC'd) I can take full benefit from it. I Amd starting to think about making the switch from XP to Vista for my main system, and keeping XP For my old system tools.
But still, NOTHING beats OS X
i wouldnt mind trying vista but im sure not about to pay for it if i dont like it...... ive seen it on my friends laptop and so far its not impressing me much....
