I am currently using the demo version of Amnesty to keep the Apple Calendar and Weather widget on my desktop. With Amnesty you can set the prefs of these desktop widgets to stay on the desktop and not float, as well as ignoring clicks.
My question is there something out there that will do the same for free or cheaper than Amnesty?

I just use Yahoo Widgets (formerly Konfabulator). It won't use Dashboard widgets, but it has a loyal following and has a good selection of widgets. It's designed to always be visible on the desktop, and it's free.
