Quick question -
Would a Yikes! G4 ZIF work in a Beige G3, and be recognized as a G4?
Thanks!
John

My Beige minitower is using a G4 ZIF (not sure where the ZIF originally came from). It's rated 350 MHz, but I've overclocked it to 375. And "About this Mac" and System Profiler both recognize the ZIF as a G4.
I'm running Jaguar on this machine, and it does okay, but I certainly wouldn't try much more than that on it. The Jaguar install took about 6 hours from start to finish. And the machine is pretty slow overall.
Just make sure you look up the proper jumper settings for the processor and system bus, or she won't boot. But it should be a rockin' Mac OS 9 machine with a G4 in it. Good luck!
Alright, great! I read that I have to get some utility to be able to use the L2 cache, but that should be easy to get.
Right now I have a 366MHz proc in there from a B&W, and I've got it clocked at 458MHz with an 83MHz bus. Yesterday I ran it overnight with iTunes visuals running fullscreen, and it never overheated or locked up. I'm just looking for something with a bit more muscle, and so I thought a G4/400 clocked at 450 would do the job nicely!
Once I get a bit more RAM (right now its fot 2x64mb and 1x128mb) I'll give panther a go, but OS 9 is good enough for me; and I may give Debian/Ubuntu a spin.
But, there never was a 366MHz B&W, only 350 and 400. Running a 350 or 400 on a 66MHz bus with a 5.5 multiplier will give you 363, so I can see the confusion. It should be fairly easy to identify the chip by the label on it over the cache chips.
Hm, well, when it was given to me, I was told its a 366MHz CPU. Next time the heatsink is off, I'll take a peek.
upgrade board in my beige g3. A sonnet tech 500 mhz g4. Anyhow, any zif cpu board from a beige, b&w, or yikes will plug into your beige. In most circumstances, you'll need to adjust the jumpers. I run 10.2.8 on mine, however it's got 320mb of ram and the original 4gb ata hard drive. Performance is less than stellar. That being said, it's in my basement and it'll end up as a print server once that Laserwriter comes my way.
I've have built several 350 mhz beige g3's with cpus from burned out rev 1 b&w g3's (this was back when a beige g3 was cheaper than a new logic board). With scavenged parts from dead B&W G3's, a beige g3 can be a decent performer.
I'd try panther on it instead of Jag, panther on many of many of my g3s, including my 300mhz beige, runs much faster than jaguar would ever dream of.

or if you want to try , you can install tiger like i have. on this system in my sig tiger runs great on it. granted with more ram tiger would run even better. tiger on my system runs more stable than OS 9.x does. i have had only 1 KP and safari has crashed on me 2 times since i have had tiger installed. i have had tiger on my system since 10.4.3.
remember anything 10.2.8 and above if you use the onboard video and/or you have more than 190 +MB ram will have the onboard video blackout freeze, unless you do the terminal fix. tiger 10.4 when i first installed it did this to me when i was trying to repair permissions. since i had to do this fix when i was running 10.2.8 i figured i would try it with tiger.
if your only using the onboard video only and have no other Mac video card. dont try this cause you will need the PCI video card to be able to see cause it will disable the onboard from working in tiger on the reboot after you do the fix. it will remain off untill you install a update for tiger 10.4.1 or up will do. then reboot then the onboard video problem will be fixed and will never happen again.
i will edit once i relocate the URL to the fix from apples site. if some one here knows the url to the fix go ahead and post it.
i also tried the Yikes G4 cpu in my Beige G3 and the results wasn't that good. yea it ran at the rated speed. BUT it seen no L2 Cache and seen only half of the available L1 cache. so it ran real slow. i tried to install a few Different L2 enablers and CPU enablers but they all caused my system to freeze when trying to boot into OS 9.2.2 when it was loading the extensions. i cant remember which one of the 3 extensions that caused the conflict with the CPU/L2 enabler, ATI Graphics Accelerator, ATI 3D Accelerator, or the ATI video Accelerator. it was one of those 3 , its been awhile ago since i tried it i know cause i used conflict catcher to help me find out what extension/s was causing the problem.
but before i removed it i booted into jag 10.2.8 with no cpu or l2 enablers and ran Xbench 1.1.3 here is the link to the results page showing both
G4 AIO VS G3 AIO
if it only shows the G4 version here is the link showing the G3 466mhz AIO
AIO G3 466mhz
if you look closely you will see that the G4 shows no L2 cache and only 16k (instruction), and 16k (data) and shows the G4 being a 60?
wile the G3 shows the 1mb L2 cache and shows the full 32k (instruction), and 32k (data) and shows the G3 as a G3
and just for kicks here is the same G3 AIO running tiger 10.4.7 useing the same xbench 1.1.3. AIO G3 tiger 10.4.7
So i just stuck with a G3 CPU and bought a G3 450mhz cpu 1mb L2 cache that was from a B&W. and since i use the stock 66mhz i had 2 options 433mhz or 466mhz so i opted for 466mhz since it was only 16mhz over stock i didn't think it would hurt the CPU with that little of a OC.
Stability must be relative. I've had precisely 2 KPs on my iBook in over 4 years, most of that running 10.2. Both KPs were sometime before 10.2.4 or 10.2.6.
6 hours for an install of Jaguar?? thats crazy. i did an install of panther on my old AIO with a 350mhz from a B&W didnt take more then an hour.
