Can't boot it

Beige G3 Macs can't boot it directly. You need to use a utility like yaboot to go into MacOS first, then switch control to Linux. Starting with the Blue/White G3 and iMacs you can boot a Linux CD directly.

I think yaboot is the program, but I could be wrong.

Are just booting the kernel?

Are just booting the kernel? You need to use the initfs too.

Same issue here

On a whim I tried to boot the Ubuntu Edgy Eft (6.10) CD from my Blue/White G3. Same problem here - it never mounts.

I was *never* able to get my wallstreet to boot off the live CD (it would have been waaaay to slow anyways) but the Alternate Install CD booted up and installed in a pinch.

I've got a B&W I had running

I've got a B&W I had running 6.06 LTS for a while. I've been meaning to put 6.10 on it, but I've rearranged my house and it's not setup ATM. From what I remember there shouldn't be much that would keep it from working on a B&W. I ran the 6.10 LiveCD on both my G3 iBook and my G4 mini pretty well. Of course, all these machines have 512MB RAM or more, which helps tremendously.

i just installed in on mine

G3 B&W Rev. 2. I put it on a 30GB hard drive (then decided it wasn't worth it, since it didn't see my video card fully for all rez's) and messed around with it for a bit.
Not a problem at all....

I just read your post a littl

I just read your post a little clearer, I think. Were you trying to use BootX on the B&W? It's NewWorld and can boot the CD directly, like any other CD.

I had Ubuntu running on my Be

I had Ubuntu running on my Beige 266 for a while. I forget all the install steps but besides KDE being horrendously slow with only 92MB of RAM (just playing around with it a bit) it worked well. If you want I could pull it back out from my computer pile and see what I did to get it to boot.

just booted from 6.10 install

booted to live, then double-clicked the installer. I just had to hold down the "C" key at start to do it.
Not sure if that will help on the beige G3 part

A note...

I'd just like to note that mm Beige Mini-tower is, as we speak, happily running the latest version of Ubuntu (dapper). Installing it wasn't TOO difficult (with some help from John8520 and aladds). For the record, i use bootX as my bootloader, and i had some issued first time round (i had to start over at one point, my own fault), but i fell confident i could do it again myself with relative ease.

If you'd like some help, look for myself, (or john or aladds, if there willing, i dont want to volunteer them) in the IRC channel.

The latest version of Ubuntu is "Edgy Eft" (6.10). Pretty nice on my spare PC.
