damn $10?? where do u live at?
Michigan state university in lansing has a surplus sale once a month, they sell everything, laptops desktops, cars bikes, furniture electronics, anything you can think of... However when my clamshell parts get here next week ill be moving the airport card over to the iBook, seems it would get more use there.. At the sale computers start at 10 dollars... The mac stuff always goes cheap, there wasnt much this time, just the G4 and a couple 17" studio displays that I snagged up
I don't understand why people feel the need to switch, I use both Windows and OS X, and I like them both for different reasons...
@ Anhaedra,
Apparently you see a need for Mac OSX too. I would say that "switching" doesn't mean you necessarily trash your Windows box for a Mac entirely. It probably just means they are using Mac OS for the first time. This is just a guess on my part as I have never had to "switch."
@ GEOS
No, I've been using Mac OS for years... The first version I used was version 5 or 6... something like that. I mostly used System 7 through 9, but I've used 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4 on various machines. I just need my Windows box too, because of the IDE storage on it, which I'm not going to just throw out, (400GB), and it's just useful to have a windows machine alongside for compatibility. Plus I'm a gamer, so there will never be a true switch for me, I'm tethered to Windows.
Right, and all i'm suggesting is that maybe he does the same thing. Perhaps until now he has never owned a Mac before and has "switched" to using it as his main computer.
woah, I never knew that. when is it held, and where? I may have to take the 1/2 hour drive there to take a look see...

You are in the mac cult. You have been assimilated!
Prepare for a great ride. Even though those macs may be on the older spectrum, they still have their usefullness. A lot more than a PC of it's age. Mac has excellent programs, and even in OS 9, some people are still making apps for it. There is less to say about that when talking about an OS around it's time (98/ME/or 2k Pro, if you are lucky to be the first to own it)
I use a PC almost everyday, but find it useful for a lot of things, like backing up DVD's and ripping music. But that's mainly because it is cheaper to make that, than buy a mac.
However, macs will be around much longer, as the good ones that apple produced (like the clamshell iBook to be exact, and the Pismo!) are almost invincible.
On my Pismo that I had, I poured Coffee into that machine about 4x (don't get on me for doing that to a mac, it was a mistake, HONEST!) and it would just dry out and boot up. I can't say the say for PeeCee's. Most of the time, when you do that, there is no use in trying to dry it out.
Mac's are in general, better quality, which requires a higher price, but if you want it to still be useful in the future, that's what macs are for!.
I still think that when Intel x86 Macs have become 5-6years old, there will be a PPC Preservation society (much like the 68k has 68kMLA) Which will keep programmers fine tuning their apps to work with the PPC.
It's also not like Windows to step the the Reqs with every release (SP2 requires 256MB Ram to run, instead of XP SP1 which reqs 128). Mac OS X (even tiger!) will run pretty fast, even on a G3 Beige.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, but enjoy the ride, and hopefully your macs will be kind to you, as long as you take care of them
My PCs have had screwdrivers dropped on the motherboards while they are running, various drinks spilled on the boards, a cat pissed on my video card on one PC, my Toshiba laptop has had the hell beaten out of it, it has a crack down the middle of the case and it's held together with 3 of 10 screws, they have been dropped from several feet, and one has been rained on, and they all work.
Oh and coius, XP requires 64MB RAM. I don't know why people say that beige G3s will run OS X ok, because my B&W sure doesn't.
To be honest, in my opinion Mac OS X is far more of a RAM hog than Windows XP is.
I've yet to use ANY machine that runs OS X well - even the macbook has an annoying delay when doing certain tasks.
my blue and white with 512MB and 32MB Radeon 7000 Mac Edition runs it perfectly. the windows don't lag and it works very good. It runs 10.3 and it's very enjoyable to use.
I think that 10.3 is the best OS X i have seen so far. I think if someone has that on the machine, it will be really enjoyable to use. I gotta admit though, sometimes tiger runs slow on my iBook 1.2 with 768MB Ram, but a restart quickly fixes that.
Then again, even a top of the line machine with any stripped down OS is not fast enough for me
