Hello everyone, I havent posted here in a very long time, but I hope the community is still as helpful as it always used to be!
Anyways, down to business, I recently purchased a black Macbook as an emergency replacement for an Alienware laptop that died unexpectedly. Not that anyone cares really, but I thought i'd get that out of the way, since its my first real venture into macs again since the inception of OSX, which I've grown to like. I installed OSXvnc version 0.6, with the hopes of controlling various programs on my macbook from my pocket PC, more on this later.
Well, it works, but the end result is wicked slow, and unreliable. I'm not sure if the problem lies in the pocket PC client, or in the VNC server itself. I'm not sure if OSXvnc is a "universal" application, so it might not be running as fast as it could be. The fact that this set-up works at all is surprising actually. My co worker had great results with this set-up, but used a windows PC as the server. I doubt that should make too much fo a difference.
What i'm ultimately trying to do is wirelessly control a large format audio console. Specificly the Yamaha PM5D-RH via its control software "Studio Manager". Other engineers have successfully done this, but they havent had anywhere near the amount of lag i'm experiencing. As a monitor engineer i can deal with a good second or so of lag, since that still saves me the time and energy of running back and forth between the stage and the console to make adjustments to mixes.
I hope this post wasnt too irritating to read, this is why i dont post too often, lol, I generally make myself sound like an idiot. Any help speeding up this set-up would be greeeatly appreciated! Thanks! -Evan

Isn't the built in apple remote desktop also a vnc server?
The Pocket PC client is probably the problem. Reducing the colour depth to 16-bit or even 8-bit should improve the speed.
The built in VNC server will take connection from vnc clients
System Preferences/Sharing/Apple Remote Desktop/Access Privileges/VNC viewers may control screen with password.
Thanks for the tips guys, i'm going to experiment with the pocket PC client a bit more. I just bought a small tablet PC on ebay, that hopefully will be a bit faster in the VNC department. I tried using the built in apple remote desktop utility, but i cant seem to get the client to connect. I'm assuming the default port is 5900? I dont see a place to modify that in the control panel.
Out of interest, what tablet pc did you purchase?
You have to make sure that the box labled "VNC viewers may control the screen with password:" then enter a password. You have to go the the "access privilegs" button to check that box.
I have only one VNC server running on a Mac, and it's running OS 9.2, so I have no experience with OS X VNC Servers. I do have several PC boxes at work where I make use of VNC, and have found that there are very good and very poor VNC servers in the Winders world. My suspicion is that the same is true for OS X. I'd suggest that you shop around and see which one works best for you. They're all free, so it's just a matter of search time & download time.
