12" G4 iBook screen replacement

Hi,

Just found the site, fantastic!
I have just bought a 1ghz G4 12" ibook with a smashed screen. My questions are...

1. What other screen can I use to replace it. G3, powerbook, PC?

2. What RAM can I use from other machines. For example, would G4 iMac RAM work in an iBook?

Cheers,
Ant

The G4 iBook apparently uses

The G4 iBook apparently uses a different cable to the G3 iBooks, so if you get a G3 screen module, you'll have to do a bit of fiddly work, but it should work. ifixit.com lists the LCD module for the G3 and G4 iBooks as the same (see http://www.ifixit.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=916&cat=&page=1 ).

With regards to the RAM, no. Some of the G4 iMac use SODIMM SDRAM, which works with G3 iBooks, but not G4, and others use DDR DIMMs, which won't fit. The G4 iBook requires DDR SODIMM RAM.

(I have a spare working, no dead pixels G3 iBook screen, which I'd part with for £80 shipped, but shipping would be from Australia, payment by Paypal and no insurance or returns if it doesn't work with your system..)

Cool, I might be tempted if I

Cool, I might be tempted if I can find out what i'll need to do to get it to work in my G4. If the cable connectors are only different on one end then it should be easy enough. Would it survive the journey?

LCD connectivity

the LCD panels from a Dual USB form factor iBook G3 will work in the iBook G4. There really wasn't a change in connectors.

So I hear..

I haven't taken any G4 iBooks apart (my girlfriend keeps me away from hers when I have a screwdriver in hand, drats), but I seem to recall there was an issue with cable length which meant one of the cables needed to be changed?

And yes, I'm pretty sure it would survive the journey.. I have a box that is about the right size, and lots of bubblewrap.

I think that might be right.

I think that might be right. Use the G4 cable. To be honest, I think I need a whole lid. Would the whole thing, screen and lid, fit a G4 base?

iBook parts compatibility

You'll need to reuse the lvds cable, reed switch/inverter cable, and other cables that are already on your iBook G4. As for the lcd and case parts (lcd frame), those will work from any 12" iBook from the 500 mhz Dual USB models all the way up to the 1.33 ghz iBook G4 12" that was discontinued in May. (the hinge and case parts are the same in regards to function and being able to be used - appearance may be different)

If you are..

If you are interested in buying the screen, email me on applefritter at splash.theducks.org.

You'll need laptop repair skills and tools to install it. Check out the instructions on http://pbfixit.com to find out if you think you can do it.

ibook G4 1.07MHZ 12" I Book Hinge broken

Hi I just bought a used G4 12" ibook. It doesn't close right because the hinge is broken. I took it apart last night to change out the hard drive and check out the damage. I had a problem with two screws. I just couldn't get them to losen up and come out. Now they are almost stripped. One screw was the screw that attaches the clutch? cover, what covers the hinges. The other was a top screw on the side of the display case. I am starting to think I would like to trade someone this display and case for one that has a perfect hinge. I would of course trade it and pay money. The display is perfect otherwise. It is just a big job and I don't think I can do it without hurting the lcd. Anyone can you help me? thanks.
