Hi all, I'm currently a mac user and I really like iTunes, and have had no problems with it at all myself. A friend of mine, however, also has iTunes and while I was on his PC the other day, iTunes ceased to have burning capacity. (This is especially a pain because everytime I touch the guy's computer, the internet or some other application dies a horrible swift death.)
At any rate, when attempting to burn we get an error message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unkown error occurred. (1771)" I can't find any documentation of any kind on this error, or why iTunes stopped burning. IT will not burn audio, MP3 or data cds at this point, although other applications (Nero, etc.) still function in their burning capacity.
Any ideas about what to do? We already tried updating and reinstalling iTunes...
Quick googling shows this page http://pc5.2ch.net/win/kako/1066/10669/1066915993.html Just search for 1771. Though I don't read the language, it mentions a specific CD drive. Could this be related to a driver issue with his CD Drive? Perhaps how iTunes handles the driver?
Just a guess.

I had the same problem, only on a PC. I was burning a new mix of stuff that I had just ripped along with stuff that I had burned previously onto other CD's. I took off the new stuff, and burning worked, so I am guessing that the problem is from some sort of burning protection on certain CD's. Try burning each album separately to see which ones work (if the music is not from CD's, then I don't know what the problem is). Hope this helps!
I too experienced this error. After much investigation I discovered that iTunes has issues importing some .3mu files (Playlists). iTunes apparently successfully imports the tracks listed in the playlist in correct order using the ‘import’ function. You are even able to play the tracks. However, when you attempt to burn the playlist using the 'Burn Playlist to CD' function, it 'checks' your playlist and then ejects your CD and displays the Unknown error (1771).
Why: What actually happens is that iTunes is too smart for it's own good. The file locations do not correctly transfer with the .3mu playlist file and it will play the song , but when using the Burn to CD function it stumbles because the individual file locations are incomplete.
Solution: I was transferring a Winamp Playlist to iTunes. I went into Winamp and added track numbers to individual tracks. Then in iTunes 'added a folder' which contained the playlist files. I then sorted the list by Track number. The Burn to CD function then worked fine.
Admittedly this is not the best solution as my playlist was only 100 or so songs and it is time consuming. But it does explain this particularly poorly documented error.
Hope this helps.

pleasee help me!!! i transferred my music into a playlist on itunes, this music contained m4a and mp3's.so i converted them all to mp3's, hoping that i could i burn a mp3 disk..no chance!! I was hoping to burn 140+ songs. When i clicked on burn, the unknown error appeared on the screen.I have no idea how to get my way around this,so am hoping somebody could help me please!! thanks alot
had the same problem. fix=go to advanced control and consolidate your library. it will copy all your files, using up space, but after it can make playlists and burn them.
Amazing the way this thread keeps getting brought back to life...I can't wait to see it again in a year or so.
You might be working with filenames that are initially too long. This is even though iTunes renames the files to a Track # | Track Title format that usually makes file names shorter. It would seem iTunes doesn't seem to be able to deal with the file names if they're initially too long. I proved this by using MusicMatch to rename my files to the iTunes-preferred Track # | Track Title format and then burning the files. Worked like a charm.
thanx i consolidated my list and it immediately cured my burners inability to perform! Bravo
hi
another way of doing it is to save the playlist as an xml file then open it with a text editor. you will see that the file paths are relative. in my case ...

what i then did was use the replace function to fund all lines with
<key>Location</key><string>music
with
<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/H:/music
with H = the drive on which the music folder resides.
i then re-imported the list and voila! it worked.
VERY EASY FIX...
1 - go to the folder where your songs are
2 - arrange the view in the folder so that you can see all of the names of the files - make sure that all of the names are FULLY visible
3 - you will find that you have atleast one unusually long filename
4 - shorten the file name
5 - re-add the song into itunes since it now has a different filename.
6 - burn the cd.
