intel imac to imac dv network

First, get a male/male FireWire 400 cable (any computer store should have one). Next, turn OFF the iMac DV and connect it to the intel one (which doesn't need to be turned off). Then, start up the DV while pressing and holding the T key on the DV's keyboard. Within a few seconds the DV should show a yellow firewire symbol on a gray background on it's screen, and the DV's hard drive should show up on the intel mac's desktop. A bonus of this connection is that it's very fast.

If you don't have one, you can make one out of a spare regular ethernet cable (Google for pinouts).

Two straight through cat5 cables and a hub work have worked for me in peecee-land. It would follow that two straight through cables and a router might. What might take some fiddling is if the router needs to be configured to act like a dumb hub. Eeun?

I have used a Linksys router as a hub, but don't know if all multi-port routers act as hubs. Don't see why they wouldn't, but YMMV.

A plain ethernet cable should work fine. I believe the intel iMac has GigE ethernet, and auto-mdix (auto-crossover) is built into the standard. Crossover cables are going to be naught but a bad memory soon.

ISTR the iMac DV may also do auto-crossover. In any case, Eudi is right, just plug them together with the plain Ethernet cable and setup a regular plain LAN.
