I did a bit of digging on the mac clones, and my first target bore fruit. more than I hoped. I was just looking for user manuals for these things, but check it/
If i can read properly, Umax is still selling the old standby Supermac C500. They also had a link for the S900, but it lead nowhere. gee, if I had a spare $175.00... wonder if there new old stock, refurb, or just plain used?
enjoy. -digital
Old new stock or refurbs. I remember these being sold in a mass exodus style back in 97-98. Personally, if I were spending $175 on new Old Stock clones, I'd get myself an S900. That was quite possibly the greatest mac clone ever. Back in my college days, I snagged one with a bad CPU card for $40. Dropped $150 into it in upgrades (250 mhz g3 card, 128 mb of ram, and a 4.5 gb hard drive), and I was set. Those S900's were really really awesome.
I had a S900, great machine if you had money.. it was rock solid once itt was up and running but expensive.. for that 175 you could get a souped up blue and white which would be cheaper in the long run.. thats the path I took and gave away my S900..
Abysmal
unless you're going for collector value here, that kind of money will buy you g4 power these days. Flea markets and trader mags have the best stock of these things.
im shocked they are still selling em. doesnt that violate the whole mac clone agreement? maybe not because they are old stock
I think the clone agreement had more to do with how many they could build; as long as that wasn't exceeded, they should be ok.
I would agree that the S900 was a great machine. I was overseer of four of them for my former employer, and still have one sitting idle in my basement after it was retired. It's got a decent G3 processor card in it, and runs 9.2.1 like a champ. I loved the number of PCI slots and drive bays, and how easy it was to upgrade them. We had previously bought a couple of 9500's, and by comparison the S900's were a dream come true!
interesting anyway. yeah i still amazed that would still have any left after all these years and that they are now selling them again. apple shouldnt care now cause they are older and since the intel switch
