I got a 486dx2/66, a USB to ethernet bridge, and a creative 6X DVD drive and hardware decoder.
I'm working on getting the 486 to recognize a hard drive of any sort, really.
Anyone know of any good DVD player softwareamajigs that support a good range of decoders? I can't find any.

I think most older 486's didn't have heatsinks, or did they? I vaguely remember seeing the old 486 models (the 33/66 mhz models) that didn't have heatsinks.
Well, VLC works, but it doesen't actually use the decoder. I'll get my neighbor to look for the CD that came with it.
I'm looking in awe at how amazingly ghetto this 486 is. it has 32MB of RAM via 16 30-pin SIMMs. It uses its SB16 for IDE, in spite if the single channel of IDE on its super-long ISA I/O card (the card that gives it serial, parallel, IDE, Etc.)
And for some reason, its 350MB hard drive contains Win98. Lord knows how they got 98 onto a drive that small, or how they used it without drop-kicking it.
Now I need an AT keyboard, a serial mouse, some ideas for hacking it and an ISA ethernet card.
i still have a 486 DX at home..an old NEC if im correct...it does have heat sync on it..but its very small. win 98 will run on it..yes its very sluggish...but hey it works.
these machines are hard to come by today but are perfect machines for satalite emulators
Well, I finally got my 2GB Win95 drive to work with it. Fortunate, because 98 freaked out when I tried to use a ps/2 mouse with a serial adapter. Now it's no longer painfully slow, but I have a host of new problems to be fixin'.
One of them being that I have to give this Win95 hard drive back.
By the way, anyone know how to get a windows HDD to stop asking for the GRUB bootloader at boot and boot on its own, without doing a Low-level format and windows reinstall on the drive? I need to free up this linux drive so I can get another install of windows 95 on the 486, but windows ME needs the drive to boot.
Run fdisk -mbr (IIRC, geeze it's been a wile since I've gone through the fun of using fdisk...), that should take out grub (which lives in the mbr, usualy.), and make windows boot normaly.
fdisk /mbr
or
format /mbr c:
Offhand I don't remember which it is.
It's DOS not UNIX.

Well, I loaned an ISA ethernet card to my friend a while back and he doesen't need it anymore. And a serial mouse, I can get quite cheaply at a thrift store or the reburbishing sirplus outlet store or even my old junior high that has loads of them (and whose SysAdmin I am good friends with). Much cheaper than shipping.
